Multi-Camera Production Roles


You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be doing
which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.

TASK 1: Define each of the following roles
Interviewer
Describe their job Reference your research

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work on the studio floor, in front of the cameras. This is because they need to be on set at
all times making sure that they are interviewing the guest.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
Good communication skills; ability to build a conversations; confidents; friendly; good
researcher. Being able to have make the guest feel comfortable is a key part as they are more
likely to open up about the topic that is being spoken about.

Director
Describe their job - Reference your research
Directors are usually the ones who take control of the whole studio and make sure that
everyone is doing their jobs correctly.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They would work in the control room as from there they would have a clear view on what is
going on and therefore would be able to direct everyone and let them all know what it is they
are doing

What skills do they need to do their job well?


Directors need to be good communicators in order to make sure that everyone in the team
knows what they are doing. A sense of authority in order to manage the team well and for
them to have someone to look up to. They also need to have knowledge on the whole preproduction stage, being able to script write and cast people that they think will be right for the
show, also the technical knowledge of how to edit and work all the control room equipment.

Camera Person
Describe their job - Reference your research
Their job role is to capture everything that is going on, whilst also following a script on what to
film. They also have to listen to what the director is saying in order to give queues to the
people on set. They are also in charge for setting up the cameras in order to make sure that
everyone fits into the shot, as it will look unprofessional if someones head has been cut off.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work on the studio floor as that is where they production will be taking place. This is so
they can talk to those on the studio floor and let them know what is going on.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to have a good idea in order to capture everything they are supposed to. They need
to have a good understanding of camera angles and also the lighting so that when they are
filming it is clear to see what they have filmed.

Sound Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
The sound mixer is someone who controls the sound that is being heard at any time. They are able
to switch between the sound from the studio and any sound made from any inserts. Its also
important to be able to control the volume levels as they dont want it to be too loud or too quiet.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The sound mixer works in the control room with all the sound equipment, and also with the vision
mixer so they know when to change any volume levels.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


The skills they need are the ability to use the equipment well and make sure its done correctly.
Being able to maintain sound levels throughout will give the whole production a professional outlook
and will give it better quality overall.

Vision Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
The vision mixer is in charge of switching in-between cameras to keep the point of interest, as the
camera always needs to be on the person who is talking.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The vision mixer is based in the control room as this is where all the equipment is kept. They would
usually be alongside the sound mixer as they need to be able to work together in order to make sure
the right sound is played at the correct time.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


Much like the other jobs, they need to know how to use the equipment well otherwise they wont get
the correct result from the production. Without any knowledge they wont be able to know when to
switch cameras to show who is speaking.

Graphics Generator
Describe their job - Reference your research
The job role of a graphics generator is to create all the graphics that appear at the beginning and
the end of the production. This includes logos, the main title sequence and the end credits. They
also need to be able to add images and videos throughout the production so that it goes along with
what they guest or interviewer is saying.

They would work in the control room so they know when the graphics need to come in during the
production.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to be creative in order to create different logos for different genres of shows. They need
to be skilled on computers in order to create the end product.

Lighting Desk
Describe their job - Reference your research
Their job is to set up and operate lighting equipment in TV and film. They would have to work with
the lighting director and director in order to get the lights to be in the correct place so that no
shadows are on any people in the production.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They would be on the studio as they would have to make sure that the lighting is always in the
correct place during the show.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to be able to use the lighting desk and also know how they need to setup the lights as
the shots may look dark and unprofessional if the lighting is correct.

Floor Manager
Describe their job - Reference your research
The floor manager is the person who is in charge of all the equipment and props on the set. They
need to make sure it is safe around the cameras and studio floor so that no one is in any danger.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They would be working on the studio floor as this is where the majority of their work takes place.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


The need to be aware of all the different hazards that may affect the show. They need to be friendly
and confident as they need to make decisions and take charge of the studio team.

Set Design
Draw a plan of your set. Mark on the position of lights, cameras, props and Green-screen
backgrounds.
Add in photographs of your final set, including props etc.

Lighting Design
Take photographs of the lighting set up for the following sections of your show;
a) The presenter introducing the show
b) Interviews (the lighting may be different for different interviews)
c) The end of the show
Stick the photographs in and add notes explaining the setup.

be comfortable with sufficient seating for all your guests. Any noise of their chatting
should not be heard on set.
