Piece on the hard life.

Inmates in prison, while putting themselves into the situation, unfortunately have to
deal with multiple hardships. Throughout the history of prison their goal was to
hopefully rehabilitate the inmate in order to make them a functional member of

society. However, the actual outcome is quite different, the inmates get
institutionalized and many times after release would feel more comfortable in the
prison atmosphere. This topic has an abundance of articles, blogs and documentarys
about it. I chose a documentary an article and a scholarly essay because I believe
these three sources have every necessary issue that I will discuss.
II.
Resource one- solitary confinement documentary1. in this documentary the purpose is to inform the audience what prisons idea to help a
inmate with violent tendencies, or mental disorders, Solitary confinement is just the idea
where the prison locks the inmates in a room by themselves for days, week, or months on
end without another human companionship. This idea leads to the inmate to be more
violent and leads to a more severe mental disorder or more isolation between the inmate
and the real world.

Inmates in prison, while putting themselves into the situation, unfortunately have to deal with
multiple hardships. Throughout the history of prison their goal was to hopefully rehabilitate the
inmate in order to make them a functional member of society. However, the actual outcome is
quite different, the inmates get institutionalized and many times after release would feel more
comfortable in the prison atmosphere. This topic has an abundance of articles, blogs, and

Eldridge 4

documentarys about the issue. Throughout the multiple sources one fact it consistent, the
ultimate end goal, and the hope of rehabilitation in prison.
While researching this topic multiple sources were taken into consideration. One of the
most reliable resources was a documentary called solitary confinement. Throughout this
broadcast the filmmakers were trying to evoke emotion from the viewers. They were hopefully
wanting to evoke strong sense of feelings for what the inmates are forced to suffer through. The
filmmakers were trying to portray a sense of understanding of how terrible solitary confinement
is and hopefully make the viewers enraged enough to fix the prison system. During the film the
filmmakers were hopefully aiming at the idea of changing the prison system and help to reform
the hardships that inmates go through, and help rehabilitate them. Throughout this documentary
released onto Netflix for the common public, the filmmakers were trying to portray this image of
hardship to any single person interested in either fixing the prison system; or to people who want
to understand more on the subject of inmates, and prison life. Throughout the whole
documentary the filmmakers had a sense of calm, and dramatic telling of the experiences that the
most intense, or mentally unstable inmates suffer through.
The second reliable source was a scholarly article on the rehabilitation of prison, and the
way that prison institutionalizes them. Unlike in the documentary, the article tries to evoke a
logical response from the readers. They hope to point out a logical argument and hopefully make
the prison system reform. The article was aimed to appeal to any higher educated scholars that
might have a chance to force change. However, any person that is interested in changing the
system would find delight in reading this. Throughout this article the viewers aimed to make the
readers understand why prison is the way it is, and why change needs to occur. In this article is
was written to read like a higher level article, which was advanced idea on the concept of this

Eldridge 5

topic; in a nonfiction mannerism. The fact that this paper was written at such a high level was the
way that the author tried to show their viewpoint, and reach the people who can really change the
environment of prison.
The next reliable source was a debate form from New York Times, which helped evoke
the feeling of logic from the reader. Throughout this debate the author hoped to point out logical
issues from his viewpoint in hopes to help the readers see his side. He believed that through a
logical appeal he would be able to evoke a response from his reader that might help change the
prison system. He was hoping to reach liberal minded people that also think that prisons need to
be reformed. However, any person interested in the topic would be just as interested as liberal
minded people. Although, they might not have the same broad idea as he. Since the NYT is a
newspaper, the viewers were more secluded to the people who either pay for the paper, or to
people who read the online edition. The author wrote an opinionated argument based on his
ideas, and the facts he believes. Since the piece is opinion based, the author has less facts and
more of an argument on his ideas, and his beliefs.
Throughout these articles only the idea was the same. There were multiple forms and
multiple genres that took place throughout this research. Since the world is so broad and intricate
many forms of the same idea can take place. Through this paper there was a documentary, a
research analysis and an opinionated argument. With each of these types they all have similar,
yet extremely different focuses, however through it all the viewer grows to understand the
writers opinion and the purpose of writing there piece.
