Activity

Level and number of Students: Basic English

Approach and goal of the activity (what you want students to learn and how
you want to teach it): The goal of the activity is for students to practice
comparative and superlative adjectives usage in real life situation. By
communicating with a peer in a way they would with anybody in the real world
were they in such situation, students will apply grammatical and lexical
knowledge as well as communicative abilities.

Materials Needed (include and attach all materials):

Pictures (of students when they were teenagers)
Blank Piece of Paper
Expected Problems: (how students may struggle or challenges they may have
doing the activity)
Some students might struggle remembering appropriate vocabulary (adjectives)
so it is important to allow them to refer to any previously provided list of
adjectives
Stages: (how you will introduce the activity, set it up with some pre-teaching of
language students will need, and the steps of the activity. Think of it as
instructions someone could follow if you had to hand the activity to another
teacher.) : This will be the last day discussing Comparatives and Superlatives.
Students will have already reviewed the grammatical material via homework and
in-class activities. But as the activity is introduced, students will be allowed to ask
any questions and any and all doubts will be surely clarified. Students will then
paired of randomly. The teacher will hand each student a piece of paper where
they will be asked to write their name as well as their partners name. She will ask
them to take out the picture of them as teenagers that they were asked to bring
to class. Then, students will compare each other as they are in the pictures and
write down 5 sentences comparing each other (applying comparative and
superlative, of course). Then students will compare themselves now to themselves
in the picture and write down 5 more sentences down in the sheet of paper after
having shared and discussed them with their peer.

Rationale and how this activity fits into a series of lessons: The idea
behind this activity is for students to become acquainted with a grammatical
feature in a way thats practical. Communicating with each other this way will
prepare them for a real life situation in which they will have to express
comparisons in the target language with a second party. The lesson is introduced
as a part of a series of lessons on Comparisons. And though it focuses solely on
adjectives and the use of comparatives and superlatives, students are working
with comparing two or more things and on relying on each other for furthering
content knowledge.
