Elements of a Story

1. Title or Topic of the lesson and Grade Level


Title: Kite Flying with Elements of a story
Topic: Kindergarten
2. Lesson Guiding Question(s):
What are the elements of a story?
What happened in the beginning/middle/end of Kite Flying?
3. Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a
story.
4. A. Learning Goals (Behavioral Objectives) and Assessments:
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to tell what happened in the
beginning/middle/end of the story.
Students will tell the elements of a story (setting
and beginning/middle/end) on their kite.

Assessments
There will be a teacher guided discussion after the
read aloud discussing what happened in the
beginning/middle/end.
The students will draw pictures on their kite. The
kite will be broken into four section: setting,
beginning, middle, and end. The students will then
fill in the appropriate sections as it pertains to Kite
Flying.

5. Materials:
Elements of a Story Kite
Read Aloud Kite Flying
Element of a story card (3): one for beginning/middle/end
Crayons
Ribbons
Touchboard
6. Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:
The students will already have been exposed to the elements of a story. Students should already
have an understanding of what a setting is. Students should also know what the
beginning/middle/end is.
7. Lesson Beginning:
To start the lesson, there will be a teacher guided discussion about the elements of a story. (For this
lesson, the teacher will skip over conflict because there is not a conflict in this story.) The teacher will
guide a discussion to have the students discuss what a setting is. The teacher will then have a
discussion about what the beginning/middle/end of a story is.

The teacher will then introduce the story Kite Flying. The teacher will read the book to the students.
After reading the story, the teacher will lead a discussion on the elements of a story. After each
element of a story, the teacher will hold up a picture card to show the students the pictures that
represent the elements of a story. This will also be used to help the students remember the elements
of the story as it pertains to the story Kite Flying. Depending on the pace of the lesson the teacher
can have students come up to hold the car, and have the class put the cards in order from
beginning/middle/end.

Differentiation:
The students will draw pictures to represent the elements of a story.
The cards will be used to help students decoding the elements of a story.
Early finishers can write their sight words on their white boards.
On the touch board, there will be picture correlating with the words on the kite.

What is the beginning?
What is the middle?
What is the end?
I wonder what the family is buying supplies for, what do you think?
What kind of kite is the family making?
What is the setting for this story?
What is the beginning of this story?
What is the middle of the story?
What is the end of this story?

Instructional Management:
The kites will already be precut and the ribbon in place.
The kite will also be premade into four equal pieces. Each piece will be dedicated to the
four elements of a story,
Students will already have crayons in their baskets, if needed teacher will provided
markers.

Transitions:

The students will sit in their rows on the carpet.


The teacher will then dismiss the students by table color so they can start their
Kite.

9. Closure:
After introducing the cards, the teacher will show the kite activity. The teacher will explain the kite and
the four sections. On the touch board the teacher will show the students pictures to help the
understand the words on the kite. For example, one section on the kite is setting. On the touch board,
I will have the word setting and next to it, there will be a picture of a house. This will help the students
to understand what they need to draw in each section. After explaining this, the students will be
dismissed to their table to complete their kite.
