Task 4.

Observe an Assessment

Observe an assessment, a formal test is preferable.

What is the math skill or concept being assessed? Operation

BEFORE

Before the assessment, watch and listen as the teacher distributes the test or
assignment.

What does she say before giving out the papers? She explain what is
the test about

How does she hand out the papers? She give the paper to each
student

What sorts of directions are given? First, she said if you find difficult
questions raise your hand and no talking

How does she ensure that all students are listening? She tells the
students to put the pencil at the table and look to her

During the assessment (give examples):

How does the teacher respond to students who raise their hands with
questions? She came to him and looked what the question is.

What sorts of questions or comments does she make? Are directions


reiterated? Direct questions

Are students directed to reread or to thing about the meaning of the


problems? They have to think of the question to solve it.

Are the students told how to proceed? No

What sorts of hints are given, if any? Nothing

During the assessment, If no student raise their hands, what does the teacher
do? They were

Does she sit at her desk?

Circulate around the room?

Does she look over the students; shoulders? (If she does, ask her later
what she was looking at)

During the assessment, are there times when the teacher addresses the whole
group? No

AFTER

What precipitates (happens before) these announcements and what are


their topics?

During the assessment how does the teacher deal with students who
finish early?

After the assessment, how does the teacher end the test or the class session?

Does she make announcements about the time remaining even before
time is up? Yes, she does.

How are papers collected? She moves to each table and take the
papers.

What happens with students who are not yet finished? They all finish.

Reflection: Do you think her actions and responses fit with the type of
assessment the students were working on?
The assessment was about assessing what is the prior knowledge that students
knew about the operation. The teacher didnt go deeply in explain the test as she
wants them to depend on themselves, but she went to students who want her help
and explain. The assessment and her actions fit to students age and their
knowledge and I think it is better to let them depend on themselves. However, that
didnt mean she gave them the paper without explain as she give them the main
idea of each questions.
