Community 1 Family
Joining To join a family you could have been born into, adopted by or accepted by members of
the family.
Conventions In my family you really only have to be caring and understanding. Helping out
family members when asked is always encouraged. Attending events such as birthdays and
holidays are highly encouraged as well. Really, the only time that you can get away from
attending such events is when you have work to do for school as continuing education is pretty
much a must.
Genre In this type of community there would be recording on a calendar. I dont believe that
this is unique.
Topics Doctors appointments, birthdays and school/work events would be the topics in
families.
Goals To have a happy cohesive family that is caring, trusting and able to prosper in life.
Literacy In my family we tend to communicate written by text and e-mail, and also by face to
face interaction to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Community 2 Pet owner
Joining You could be a pet owner, a part of a family that owns a pet, or be someone that is
responsible for the care of a pet.

Conventions You must feed your pet, ensure that your pet has the proper grooming, walk/play
with your pet on a regular basis and finally you must clean up after your pet.
Gene Would be recording scheduled health care visits and play time.
Topic Would include, but not limited to, annual exams, teeth cleaning, pet support groups etc.
Goals To have a healthy happy pet that grows and continues to increase your happiness.
Literacy Most of the time it would have to be oral and visual.

Community 3 College Student
Joining You first must take standardized testing. Then you must apply to whatever college you
want to attend and get accepted. Then you must find a way to pay for it, I.E., scholarship or
student loans.
Conventions You must always get passing grades and not by cheating. You must remain an
upstanding citizen in the local communities.
Gene Writing done at the college level would be research papers and essays.
Topic The topic would be dependent upon the course that you are taking.
Goals The biggest goal is to graduate.
Literacy This would have to be written, oral and visual because you will encounter each while
attending college.

Community 4 United States Veteran

Joining Must have served in one of the four branches of the United States Military.
Conventions You must have had an honorable discharge, maintain a good standing in the local
communities and make good decisions in everyday life.
Gene Most writing done by vets would be an autobiography.
Topics Depending on if the vet went to war or not the topics would include what went on
during their time in a hostile country or strictly what happened while they were on active duty.
Goals The first goal is to get the American people to see the truths of war and secondly to just
survive and become a productive member of society.
Literacy If you go the VA here in El Paso you will see that 99% of our literacy is oral.
Everyone there would be more than happy to talk your ear off about their adventures.
