Introduccin
En esta exposicin fotogrfica presentamos una seleccin
de imgenes que fueron recopiladas durante los procesos
de exploracin y restauracin del Palacio del Gobernador de
Uxmal, realizados en la temporada 2014.
Adems de los arquelogos, arquitectos y topgrafos,
en un proyecto arqueolgico participan maestros albailes,
ayudantes, mezcleros, choferes, cocineros; todos estos son los
Hroes Annimos de la Restauracin, quienes da a da trabajan
arduamente para la conservacin del patrimonio.
Son ellos quienes regularmente no aparecen en las
fotografas: los trabajadores cuya labor es indispensable para
manipular y regresar a su lugar original cada una de las piezas
que forman la totalidad del monumento. Si el arquelogo es el
encargado de analizar e interpretar la informacin, son ellos la
mano que gilmente da forma al gran rompecabezas.
A travs de su lente, el fotgrafo Luis Alberto Pech Pech
captur diferentes momentos y expresiones; no solamente
los producidos por el esfuerzo fsico, sino tambin rostros
ms relajados, como cuando se disfruta del keyem: la hora
de tomar el pozole y otros alimentos que se comparten entre
compaeros, para despus tomarse un descanso antes de
regresar a la jornada.
Finalmente, la mayor satisfaccin que comparten todos
los trabajadores que conforman el proyecto arqueolgico, es
cuando el esfuerzo humano se transforma en un monumento
que los mayas actuales restauraron para el disfrute de la
sociedad.

Introduction
In this photographic exhibition we present a selection
of images that were gathered during the exploration and
restoration processes of The House Of The Governor,
performed in season 2014.
In an archeological project not only work archeologists,
architects, and topographers, but also masons, laborers, drivers
and cooks; these are The Anonymous Heroes Of Restoration,
who work hard every day to preserve the Heritage.
It is they who do not regularly appear in photographs: the
labor man whose work is essential to manipulate and return to
their original place each of the pieces forming the monument.
If the archeologist is responsible for analyzing and interpreting
the information, they are the hand that shapes the puzzle.
Through his lens, the photographer Luis Alberto Pech
Pech captured various moments and expressions, not only
those ones that reflects the physical exertion, but we can
also find more relaxed faces, like when they are enjoying the
Keyem: the lunch that is shared with colleagues while resting
before returning to work.
Finally, the greatest satisfaction they share is to see his
efforts becoming a monument that current Mayan people have
restored for the benefit of society.

The image below shows the northwest corner

of The House Of The Governor around
1913, when Juan Martinez Hernndez made
an inspection tour to the site.
The other pictures were taken between 1927
and 1928, during the conservation work
developed under the supervision of Jose
Erosa Peniche.
Photography has been used ever since as an
indispensable tool for restoration, because it
is a faithful record of the monuments.

arquitectura prehispnica; pues, de
acuerdo a su cosmovisin, los mayas
tenan la costumbre de construir
sobre sus viejas edificaciones. En la
excavacin realizada en el Basamento,
se encontr una subestructura
correspondiente al periodo Puuc
Temprano (500-750 d.C.), sobre
la que desplanta el Palacio del
Gobernador, que data del Clsico
Tardo (970 d.C.).

investigacin es parte esencial de un

An unstoppable passion

Una pasin que no se detiene

The substructures, earlier stages of the buildings occupation,

are a common feature of the pre-hispanic architecture; since
the Mayans, according to their worldview, were accustomed
to build on top their old buildings. During the excavation
performed in the platform, a substructure correspondent to
the Early Puuc period (500-750 AD) was found, on which
The House Of The Governor rises, dating from the Late
Classic period (970 AD).
In addition to the excavation, research is an essential part of
an archaeological project. Recording the data found during
fieldwork allows the analysis of constructive systems, as
well as the architectonic and chronological sequence of each
building fase.
Modern technology allows us to read the data in a way that
was not possible before. Today we have tools that enable
us to obtain more accurate information, with which we
can understand better our heritage and give rise to future
research.
