To Whom It May Concern:

Tonya King was my student during her 10 week psychiatric/mental health nursing clinical
rotation last semester. As a clinical instructor/lecturer with fifty years experience in various
psych nursing areas, I have a unique opportunity to become acquainted with my students as
individuals. Since they're learning to use their own personalities as a therapeutic tool, I try to
help them get to know themselves more in depth and as members of a team on our 3-unit
inpatient facility. During our psych rotation, they also experience working with older adults,
pediatric therapy services, and intensive adult outpatient group therapy. My goal for them is to
practice interpersonal relationship skills that can be generalized and applied to any nursing
endeavor they choose.
You absolutely will want to interview Tonya King. Why? First, review her outstanding resume.
Tonya looks really good on paper, but she will definitely impress you in person - as she did me
last year in clinicals. Adjectives like smart, caring, and energetic come to mind. If there was an
important occasion to be celebrated, Tonya organized all of her 50 student class to make it
happen. Just amazing! Her academic, scholarship-worthy, and volunteer achievements are
truly admirable in their breadth and depth. All involve nursing, public health, and psychology on
a global scale.
Now the usual (but true) description of the strengths and attributes that Tonya will bring to your
organization: 1) a broad and in depth nursing knowledge base; 2) highly developed
technical/technology abilities; 3) excellent verbal/written communication skills and finally; 4) an
appreciation of the value of the continued application of evidenced-based nursing practice.
Tonya King is ready to hit the ground running - even as a new grad. All of her hands on
experience in and out of the University of Arizona College of Nursing (one of the top 20 in the
nation) have produced a mature, competent, compassionate healthcare provider. Normally, we
would recommend that a "generalist" position in a hospital is preferable for the first job our
graduates seek. However, you can see where Tonya's interests are focused. Given who she
is, we would make an exception in our usual advise here.
Tonya's warmth in caring for patients will be immediately evident to them as well as to her
superiors. It won't be long after that her strong abilities and pleasant assertiveness will reveal
her natural leadership skills. Hopefully, this letter will encourage you to make Tonya King the
newest member of your leadership today.
Sincerely,

Susan Markovich, RN, MSN
