LESSONSUMMARY/OVERVIEW
Thislessonwillteachstudentswheretheirselectedpieceoffruitcomesfromandhowfarithastotraveltogetto
theirhouse.Wewilllookatthestickerontheirfruitandtrytofindwhereitcamefrom.Oncewehaveidentified
whereitcamefrom.Theywilldoresearchtofindthepathwayittookinordertogettotheirhouse.Theywillneed
tolocateonamapwhereitstartedandthepathwayittooktogettoPhoenixthentotheirhouse.Iwillgivethema
printoutoftheworldonamapandtheywillusethattodrawtheirpathandlabelthemap.Theywillneedtolabel
theoceansitpassesthoughalongwiththecountriesandstates.Thisisrelatedtosustainabilitybecausestudentswill
calculatehowmanymilesittravelsandtheteachershouldmentionthegasemissionsthatgoalongwiththetripthe
fruittook.InlearningaboutthisstudentswillbeactivelyusingSystemsThinkingtofindtheprocessoffruit
distribution.
OBJECTIVES
Studentswillbeabletowriteapaperbasedontheirresearchusingdirectinformationintheirpaper.
Studentswillbeabletolocateplacesonamapandlabelcountries,oceans,andstates.
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
Studentswillwriteaonetotwopagepaperonwhattheyhaveresearched.Eachparagraphmustbeincorrectformat
withcapitalsandpunctuation.Eachparagraphshouldalsobe45sentenceseach.
Thepointstheyneedtomention:
- where it was grown
- how it is shipped
- how many miles it travels to get to Phoenix

- The amount of gas that may have been used


- Why this specific location is ideal for growing that fruit
- How much money it costs to ship from where it was grown
- The process it goes through after being grown.
PREREQUISITEKNOWLEDGE
Priortothislesson,studentsneedtoknowwhatafruitisandwheretheycangetone.Fortheirmaptheyneedto
knowhowtoreadamapandthedetailseachmaphas.Alongwiththattheyneedtoknowhowtolabelamapand
properwaystolabelit.Theyalsoneedtoknowhowtodoaresearchpaper,utilizingtheInternetandbooks.
Studentswillalsoneedtoknowhowtowriteapaperusingproperpunctuationandspacing.
