Working together as an ensemble

Expression of Music (1.1.4)
Materials/Resources Used: Songs of the 50s Book/CD, Piano,
instruments (only if needed)
Learning Procedure:
a) Introduction
a. When the students walk in they will be asked to sit off to
the side because during this class they will be assigned
their rows for their concert. The rows will alternate boy girl
as much as possible and the students will be organized by
height. After they are put in their new rows they will be
instructed on how they walk into class from now on and
what side of the room they will be on (because next week
the other 3rd grade class will be coming at the same time
for group practice)
b. We will start class by singing the hello song with solfege
and then warming up to backbone up. After backbone up
we will give a quick list of what we are going to be doing in
class today so the students know what is expected of
them.
c. To refresh their memories I will quickly run through what
we learned last week. If there is a spot that the students
forget or have a hard time singing through I will go over it
briefly to help them remember.
b) Procedures
a. During this rehearsal of Blue Suede Shoes I will teach the
verses the same as I did when I taught the opening verse
and the choruses. We will start with the first verse by
breaking it up into smaller sections. The students will
repeat after me the words in rhythm. Once I have gone
over all of the words I will have the students listen to me
play the piano and sing each section and then they will
sing along with me while I play the piano.
b. We changed some of the words in the verses in order to
make it more appropriate for third graders to sing (ex. Step

on my face was changed to break my face and slander was

changed to say). I will let the kids know this so when we
sing with the CD they are aware that it will be a little
different.
c) Transition
a. In between each verse the students will sing whichever
verse we were working on in its entirety before moving
onto the next section. If it doesnt go well I will have them
sing it again. I will make sure they have sung both verses
all the way through before trying it with the CD
d) Closure
a. Now that the students know all the parts of the song they
are able to sing with the CD the entire time. I will need to
point out that we changed some of the words in the verses
in order to make it more kid friendly. When we get to
those parts on the CD I will make sure to sing louder than
normal in order to emphasize the change of lyrics. We will
sing all the way through with the CD at least once. If there
is time we will do it twice.
Accommodation: If some of the words are hard for kids to pronounce
I will have them say it a few times in order to help them practice. Also,
if kids need more or less practice on a section I can adjust the speed of
my teaching in order to accommodate for that.
Assessment: (Observational) I will be assessing how much they
remember from last week, how quickly they are able to learn the
verses this week, and their ability to sing a long with the CD. I will also
be assessing their singing posture and voice levels, which are
important to be practicing in the weeks leading up to the concert.
