Racism in this world today has always been a significant problem when discriminating
against others. A problem that some people might say may never come to an end. With a growing
nation also comes increased problems but it is said to be known that a lot of problems come from
social media. As a reader, there is a reason why my piece caught your attention. Was it the word
racism? Or was it the social media pictures that are put above the article that caught your
attention? Could it of been simply both? Statistics show that nearly two-thirds of American
adults (65%) use social networking sites in 2015, up from 7% when Pew Research Center began
systematically tracking social media usage in 2005. (Andrew Perrin) The main social media
website that has a significant effect on racism and that will be discussed in this opinion piece
today is Facebook.
Social media was created for friends and family to share what is happening in their lives
with each other on a day to day basis, such as Facebook. Today, there is something much more
discriminant and offensive on this social media network. Individuals write vulgar and races
status toward people that they may know but also to people they may never meet. For example, a
status posted on Facebook June 21, 2015 by a user named Shan Huts, Do you all know what
Obama Coffee is? Black and weak. Another status posted on Facebook December 19, 2011 by a
user named Carson Jones read, I wish I was Asian so I could get an academic scholarship.
These are just two of thousands of races posts on Facebook. Why have these post not been
reported to the corporate of Facebook, and if they have been reported then why have they not
been deleted? Facebook posted online September 14, 2015 to The Wall Street Journal,
Facebook will start to work with German Justice Ministry to fightracist messages on the
social networks platform.(Ruth Bender) www.wsj.com/facebook since then, Facebook has
only deleted 60 racist posts. It is already December people! Only 60 posts have been removed in
3 months? This is a policy that has to change! Racist posts of any kind should be 100% banned
from Facebook. When will our world wake up and smell the hatred in the air? On November 8,
2008, a 19 year old African-American male named Abraham Biggs committed suicide because of
the bullying and racial Facebook post that the young boy began to receive. If there is one suicide
attempt over racial posts on Facebook, then there could be several! Have you read enough? Have
I Convinced you that Facebook needs to re-construct its policy on what can and cannot be posted
by individuals. If I have convinced you of a needed policy change then there are steps that we as
a community can do together to solve this racial problem.
Step one in making this policy change is follow this link, www.facebook.com once you
have followed the link, you may log into your account or if you do not have one then it is quick
and easy to create one. Just follow the steps listed on the link. Step two in making this change is
to go to your settings and press the link that says Report a problem. In the form they gave you,
there you will be able to provide reasoning of why you feel that Facebook needs to 100% ban
racial posts of all kind. Facebook insures that, feedback from the users of Facebook has helped
us redesign our products, improve our policies and fix technical problems. (Facebook, Inc.)
The very last step is to simply pass on the article in hopes of convincing others that social media
is not the place for racial comments. With the communitys help, we have the potential to change
the policy of Facebook and change the face of social media.
