How to Prevent Cyber Bullying

Have you ever witnessed someone committing suicide? Have you ever witnessed
someone being bullied on social media? If yes, did you try to prevent the situation? Well, I
witnessed someone committing suicide for being bullied but I didnt stop it. My old neighbor
named Lameshia was being bullied everyday at school. People would say ugly and mean words
to her. One day she decided to get on social media to vent. The bullying continued on social
media under her statuses and the last comment someone made was you should kill yourself.
Next thing I knew, I heard police sirens outside. Come to find out, Lameshia grabbed a gun and
shot herself in the head. Have you ever noticed after someone commits suicide, theres a person
they knew saying, I should have been there for her, and maybe this wouldnt have happened.
What can we do to prevent suicide from bullying?
What is bullying? According to stopbullying.gov, Bullying is unwanted, aggressive
behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.
Bullying to me is the repetitive use of words or actions for a reason no other than to make
someone feel bad. There are different types of bullying such as cyber, physical, verbal, and
social. Cyber bullying takes place on social media and/or a cell phone. Physical bullying
involves hitting, pushing, kicking, etc. Verbal bullying is where people say hurtful words to
someone or call them a specific name like ugly.. Social is where you use other people you

known to hurt someone. It can be a relative, or a friend. Spreading rumors is always a form of
social bullying.
When I think about social bullying, I think about the time I was bullied in elementary by
a girl named Ashley who I thought was my friend. Ashley was in the 5th grade and I was in the 1st
grade. Ashley had come to me and started talking to me like wed known each other forever. I
thought it was pretty cool to have a friend that was older than me. I had no problem talking to
her. As she was talking to me, she told me to come to the bathroom with her. When we got to the
bathroom she told me to look in the toilet. In my head Im thinking why? but of course I did it.
As were walking to the bathroom, its like my armpit began to itch and a leak of sweat dripping
its way down my lower back. Soon as I went into the stall, she grabbed my head and said I will
put your head in the toilet. It was weird because she began to laugh after she told me that. I ran
out of there and told the principal. I know youre thinking she just making this story up. NO!
This is a true story. The principal made a meeting with my parents and her parents to talk about
it. The crazy thing was, her mom said, thats how she plays with her friends. After the meeting,
Ashley never spoke to me again. As I grew older, I realized I was bullied in the 1st grade. A lot of
parents/ adults just see bullying as kids just being kids.
In todays society, cyberbullying seems to be the big issue children go through everyday.
Im pretty sure everyone has witnessed someone being bullied or has been bullied by someone
online. It could simply be you saying hurtful words to someone or vice versa. 58% of kids
admitted someone has said hurtful words to them online. According to dosomething.org, nearly
43% of kids have been bullied online. 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once. It also reports
that, 90% of teens that have seen social-media bullying say they have ignored it. 84% have seen

others tell cyber bullies to stop. Ever wondered what could you do to stop the situation and
prevent it from happening again? Theres a lot of ways to prevent cyber bullying.
One way you could prevent cyber bullying is to not respond to the negative comments
being made. In certain situations, its best to ignore it. All bullies look for is how youll react, and
with you reacting to it they think it gives them power over you. Trying to get back a bully will
only turn you into one. Two wrongs dont make a right, but that doesn't mean you cant stand up
for yourself. You could tell the person to stop. If you have to, practice with your friend or
family member. Dont do it if youre not 100% comfortable, because you have to say it with
confidence. You need to make it clear that you will not stand for how theyre treating you. If
youre not comfortable just remove yourself from the situation. Once a bully sees that youre not
tolerating it, and then eventually theyll quit. Its only fun if you react to it.
I can say, theres only one good thing about cyber bullying and thats saving the
evidence. With cyber bullying taking place on your phone or online, you could screenshot or take
a picture and show someone who you know could help you. You could save the evidence in case
the situation escalates. A lot of teens call it as being a snitch, but it best to get someone to help
before it goes too far. According to nobullying.com, about 20% of kids cyber bullied think about
suicide, and 1 in 10 attempts it. Always protect yourself when youre on social media. If you
have to, make all your profiles private including facebook, twitter, and other social media sites.
Adjust your profiles to where only your friends and people that youre comfortable with see your
posts/statues. Think before you post a status. This is one of the best ways to prevent
cyberbullying from happening. Its very important to keep personal information to yourself,
because someone could always twist your words around and spread a rumor about what youd
post on the internet.

Ten out of 20 surveys say they have been bullied. They were all picked on because of
their differences. One of the survey takers were bullied for trying to prevent another person being
bullied. The survey taker almost got beat up in the process but they said it was worth it. The
bully use to mess with the whole school, but once they took it upon themselves to put the bully in
their place, it worked. Wow! I can never understand the fun in bullying someone.
After researching and writing a paper on bullying, I learn bullying is very dangerous.
Everyday theres a teen being bullied online. Its sad that teens cant get on social media and
enjoy it without being bullied or witnessing someone being bullied. If you ever see someone
being bully, look at it as if its your sibling or relative being bullied and stand up for them. You
can change someones life just by being there for him or her.
