Artifact Reflection Health Promotion Portfolio

University of Wisconsin Platteville

Title of Experience/Artifact:

Pre and Post-Test

Date Experience Completed:

December 2015

Describe your educational experience/artifact:

My artifact is a pre and post-test that I have used on a client to track progress. The results of this
specific pre and post-test can be deceiving, because the client is already in great shape because of
his occupation requires that he meets their fitness standards. The pre and post-test was
completed in an hour during our second session. The tests that were performed was most of the
Fit Lab protocol (Height, Weight, Lung Function, Push Up, Sit Up, Cholesterol, etc.) and we also
performed a max bench press and back squat test. We performed the last two tests because his
goals were to make strength gains in those two lifts.
Health Promotion Portfolio Alignment Standards

I believe this artifact best aligns with standard eight, assessment, which states: the health
promoter understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and
ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the client. This artifact
aligns with the designated standard because; I am using this tool to assess how effective the
exercise program I prescribed is at achieving the clients goals. It is a very practical tool,
considering that everybody responds to certain exercises differently. This allows me to see if I
need to make any changes in the program and see the progress that my client has made. I am
also using informal assessment strategies with my clients every day that we meet to ensure that
they are getting everything they can out of our sessions.
Health and Human Performance Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Alignment

I believe this artifact best aligns with KSD4.b. maintains accurate records, which states: the
candidate values, understands, and can maintain accurate records and assessment data. While
maintaining accurate client information concerning clients progress, pre and post-test
assessments. This artifact aligns with the designated KSD because; I am maintain accurate
records of my clients through pre and post-test assessments. The pre and post-test assessments
allow me to see and track the progress that my client is making. This particular client can have
deceiving results that do not look like much, but one has to take into account that he came in
already in great physical condition. The pre and post-assessment tools allow me to track what
works and what does not. This would be highly practical for long-term clients. Keeping these
accurate records will help me be a more proficient in my profession.
What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience:

I have learned how to use pre and post-tests for many other things besides personal training and
the importance behind them. We learn about pre and post-tests from a very early age in our
science classes and they do a great job of teaching us how to apply them to everyday situations.
The pre and post-test that I performed has just reinforced that further. I also learned what is
realistic for a pre and post-test for the time frame of three months. I believe that is the biggest
thing I will take away from this experience. I now know how to build better pre and post-tests
for exercise clients and their goals.

What I learned about myself as a prospective health promotion specialist as a result of this:

I learned that I really enjoy performing the tests, just like my clients do. It is interesting and
exciting to see the progress they have made from the sessions we have completed. It has been an
eye opener for some clients in the past also. I have had clients who give minimal effort and I
always preach that it will elicit minimal results. They usually half listen, or think that what they
give is good enough to achieve their goals. When the post-test rolls around, they can see that my
advice and preaching for 16 weeks was true and that they are not above this.
