EDUC 5324: INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY INTO EDUCATION
Name:___Kubra Unlu_____________ Date: 9/20/2015_____________________
Topic Selected:
Teachers need to be trained and go through professional development in order to
successfully implement technology into education.

1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review: Every teacher has different level of technology

literacy. Therefore, every professional development may not be practical for each teacher.
Activities may not provide ongoing, hands-on training for teachers or practical strategies
for implementing technology into curriculum. In order to facilitate learner-centered,
technology-rich instruction to K-12 students, teachers must be afforded opportunities to
develop key understandings and skills, rarely evident in most professional development
programs (Polly & Hannafin, 2010)
Hiring qualified teachers is crucial part of schools success as not to hire just to fill a
position, but rather to acquire the number and type of people necessary for the present
and future success of the school district (Rebore 2001). However, Today, information

and communication technology can be an effective instrument for professional

development of current teachers ( Copper, J., & Semich, G. (01/01/2014).
When professional learning is integrated into the schools culture, teachers obtain on site,
just-in time and continual support from their peers (Glazer, Hannafin & Song, 2005). On
the other hand, professional development programs are essential for promoting
technology usage in schools but school leaders should help teachers to decide on
appropriate training options ( Eib, B. J. 2002).
Lastly, A group of research suggests that when professional development includes
modeling, hands-on practice, continuing support, collaboration, and easy access to the
technology, it is effective and gives knowledge or skill to use technology to teach
(Rosenfeld and Martinez-Pons, 2005).

2. REFLECTION:

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection:

I personally think that these studies revealed that professional development had
highest impact on effective technology usage which followed by school technology plan
and condition of all technology as well as availability of immediate technology support.
Additionally, all technology has to be functional and used effectively to the
maximum capacity. Immediate technology support should be available for teachers and
students. Schools have to make technology easily accessible by teachers. Providing

technology related professional development is important but teachers have to be

motivated to use technology. In order to attract all teachers to improve their job skills
self-motivation incentive itself is not strong enough.
