Introduction
Construction Technology is a strand in Career and Technology Studies, and
has been developed to help meet the current needs of society in the
construction industry. Students completing modules from this cluster have
the opportunity to investigate and develop important knowledge, skills, and
attitudes relative to the design, construction and maintenance of buildings
and other related products. Students are provided with a broad base of
relative theory and practice that builds daily living and career-specific skills.
Successful completion of courses in this strand is intended to provide
students with the skills and experience required for pursuing construction
and/or woodworking as a hobby, entry-level employment or for pursuing
post-secondary education in the field of construction technology.

Major Goals of Construction Technology

Develop SAFE tool and machining habits


Communicate and work as effective team members as well as develop
a positive attitude toward individual and team work responsibilities,
quality production and service
Creatively seek practical solutions to problems
Assess personal interests and identify further educational and career
opportunities
Demonstrate a working knowledge of materials, tools, and processes
that are used to create buildings and other related products that meet
the needs and wants of society
Develop the work ethic and sense of responsibility required for
employment in the construction industry

Success in Construction Technology


To be successful in Construction Technology it is important that you:

Maintain good attendance and be punctual


o Number of credits as well as your grade is greatly dependant on
your attendance and work ethic while in the shop.

Be attentive and ask questions


o Come to class with an open mind
o Do not be afraid to ask questions if you are unsure of a
procedure or skill

Respect and Adhere to the rules and regulations of Chinook High


School
o Respect others
o Respect property (both personal & school)

Participation & Work Habits


o Be prepared to work hard while in the shop
o Foul play/goofing off will not be tolerated

Evaluation
Except for CON 1010, all projects are worth 100% of module grade. CON
1010 is a combination of safety tests, unit work sheets, and tool certification.
The grading for projects is as follows:

Shop Procedures & Safety Guidelines

All students that use the shop must complete the shop safety test, and
sign the shop safety contract.
Students must get 80% on the shop safety tests before they are
permitted certification on power tool/machines.
Never use equipment without a thorough understanding of its
operation. An instructor must certify you before using equipment.
All students will be given an Operators License and must pass their
hands-on training under supervision by an instructor before permitted
to operate major power tools.
3 demerits will be allotted to each operators license. If a student
makes 3 safety violations (demerits), they must retake the shop safety
exam as well as get recertified on all tools.
Eye protection is mandatory while working in the shop. Hearing
protection is recommended.
Tuck in all loose clothing/jewelry and keep long hair tied back when
operating machines
Proper footwear must be worn in the shop. (No sandals or open-toed
shoes)
Ipods, earphones, and cell phones are NOT permitted in the shop area.
(Cellphones/cameras may be used to track progress of project only
when approved by instructor).
Once finished with a machine, turn it off and wait for it to come to a
complete stop before walking away from it
Never make adjustments or repairs to machines. Notify instructor if
repairs are needed.
All students are expected to participate in clean-up at the end of each
class.
Put hand tools, bits, and other materials in their proper place,
immediately after use.
No horseplay, running, yelling, or sudden movements toward persons
at machines.
Avoid talking or other distractions while operating tools and
equipment.
Never lose focus while using a machine. Keep your mind on the task at
hand.

All accidents, injuries, and machine damage must be reported


immediately to the instructor. An incident report must be filled out and
dated/signed by both student and instructor

Failure to adhere to these rules and guidelines will result in tool


privileges being revoked or removal from the class

Grade 10 - Introductory Level

Learning Objectives:
The introductory level of Construction Technology is designed to give
basic skills and techniques with the use of tools to construct basic
wood projects. This course will be the foundation for skills needed for
Intermediate and Advanced level construction courses.
Learner Expectations:
Each student can complete up to six modules, which will fulfill the
course requirements. All grade 10 students will work on introductory
level credits with set projects. Each student will need to complete Con
1010 Module (safety and basic tool work sheets) as it is a pre-requisite
for all construction modules. A grade of no less than 80% will be
accepted on all safety exams and will need to be rewritten if that grade
is not achieved.

Grade 11 Intermediate Level

Learning Objectives:
The intermediate level of Construction Technology is designed to build
upon knowledge obtained from the introductory level modules and to
construct more in-depth projects using plans with greater detail. It will
begin to explore opportunities in the construction and cabinetry fields.
Learner Expectations:
Each student can complete up to six modules, which will fulfill the
course requirements. Although intermediate level credits are
recommended for grade 11 students, they are not limited to these
sections. A grade of no less than 80% will be accepted on all safety
exams and will need to be rewritten if that grade is not achieved.

Grade 12 Advanced Level

Learner Objectives:
The advanced level of Construction Technology is designed to build
upon knowledge obtained from the intermediate level modules and
prepare students for entry into the work force or post-secondary
education in the trades. Expectations for students at this level are
much greater than prior levels. The major focus will be on the ability to
work independently and problem solving.
Learner Expectations:
Each student can complete up to six modules, which will fulfill the
course requirements. Although advanced level credits are
recommended for grade 12 students, they are not limited to these
sections. A grade of no less than 80% will be expected on all safety
exams and will need to be rewritten if that grade is not achieved .

Dear Parents/Guardians:
In an attempt to involve you in your son/daughter/dependents Construction
Technologies experience, I ask that you take a moment to read through a
couple of documents regarding the Construction Technologies program here
at Chinook High School. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend an
open invitation for you to stop by the shop and see what your
son/daughter/dependant is building.
The first and most important goal of our Construction Technologies program
is to ensure your child/dependents safety. Your son/daughter/dependent will
be working with a variety of large power tools, machines and saws, which if
used improperly may pose serious safety risks. It is my intention here to
simply ensure that you are aware of what your son/daughter/dependent will
be doing this semester.
