(please circle)
1 2 3 4 5

Key Concepts for each area (1-2 each): What you want the
students to know.*
1. Visual Art: How their families came over to America and
what does their family tree have in common with other
classmates?
2. Literacy: After interviewing their family members the
students should know where their heritage started from
and was the journey difficult or easy to come to America?
3. Social Studies/Relationships: What are the common
topics of why people left their homeland to come to
America?

Essential Questions (1-2) *: What makes you the person

you are today? Compare and contrast cultural traditions
among the class?

Lesson Objectives/Goals: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/newteacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): What you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to use a map to show the path of immigration of their families from their
homeland to America
2. Literacy: The students will be able to write at least five interview questions that help them gain information about
their family heritage. Also the students will look into their heritage and talk about what they have learned.
3. Social Studies/Relationships: The students will be able to compare and contrast cultural traditions among classmates
Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) (3-4)

Instructional Strategies (Teachers approach to helping

students achieve learning): Some instructional strategies

1. Visual Art (May use NAEA National standards):

Analyze components in visual imagery that convey
messages.
2. Literacy:
Apply time-management and organizational
techniques necessary for assignments and/or task
completion. DOK: Level 3
3. Social Studies/Relationships:
Recognize and respect diverse groups within the
school and community. DOK: Level 2

I would be using in this lesson plan are

lectures/discussions on immigration and America as a
melting pot. Another strategy is that they will be doing
an independent project on making a family tree and
showing on a map where their family is from.

Content Areas Integrated*:

1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artist: Alighiero Boetti)
2. Literacy- When Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest
3. Social Studies- Map journey to America

Lesson Structure & Procedure(s) Sequence of events of

the lesson elements. (The before, during, and after the
lesson, e.g. Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided
Practice, Conclusion ,please be very specific, walk me
through step by step of the What of what is happening
with a rationale as to WHY you are doing this):
1. Show my family tree and show where my family came
from, we will also read When Jessie Came Across the Sea
by Amy Hest
2. As a class, we will discuss what immigration is and why
people call America the melting pot-engagement. I am
doing this because I want my children to understand what
immigration is and how it affects the world. Immigration
is big in the United States and my children have to
understand that.
3. As a class, we will discuss different cultures and what
those cultures mean to people. engagement. I am doing
this because I want my children to know that everyone is
different but equal. We all come from different cultures
and that is okay. That is what makes the world so special.
4. As a class, on a sheet of paper have them fill out where
they think they are from.-engagement. This gets the class
communicating as a whole.
5. For homework the children need to make up five
interview questions and ask their families the questions.
Ask them about their heritage and why did they come to
America.-procedure
6. After they have completed the interview, we will share
as a class and write down all the questions down on a big
sheet of paper.-engagement. Once again this will get the
classroom communicating as a whole and the children will

Opening (Gaining Attention, what will you show, or

demonstrate)*: I will show my students where my family is
from using the map to show their journey to America. I will
also share some information on my family using the family
tree.

Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set, how will student

share what they learned): My students will present their
map and share their information they have learned. They
will come up and give a 2 minute speech on their
research.

Formative Assessment strategy: (how will you assess

while the learning is happening?)
Were the students able write questions that would
provide them with important information about their
families?
Did students correctly locate the countries of their
heritage on a world map?
Were students able to follow directions and use the
family tree template correctly?

Summative Assessment strategy*: I will use a rubric to

grade each childs presentation and see if they did
everything correctly. The children will have this rubric
with them at the beginning of the lesson. Another
assessment is that they will present what they found
about how their family came to America and why.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (What do they need to already know): The prior
knowledge they will draw upon is what immigration is and how different or similar cultures can be.

Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student
learning: Students will be able to record their interviews on a tape recorder so they can press play and let everyone
else hear the interview.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways: This lesson will encourage
students to solve in divergent ways because they will understand the differences of each culture. Everyone is different
in the world but we are all equal. Does not matter where you come from, once you get to America everyone is equal
and treated fairly.

How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have
learned something?): The students will know they have learned something when each child talks about their heritage
and where they come from. America is the melting pot for freedom and equality. After everyone is done, I will ask my
students to write down one thing they have learned throughout this lesson.

Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor To help meet the needs of all learners, learning

differences, cultural and language differences, etc. ELL student will be able to make their project in their own language
and then we will translate it so we can understand what they learned. The students can type their work so it will be
legible and easy to read.
