Description of Activities and Setting

I will get the students attention by first saying, Have you ever noticed that
everything you touch feels different? Touch your hair- What does it feel like?
Touch your desk- what does it feel like? Touch the floor- What does it feel
like? (CFU) Can someone tell me something else that feels or looks
different? (CFU)
I will provide students with a piece of felt, a button and a crayon. For the next
5 minutes I will encourage students to explore these items by noting the way
they feel, the way they look and the way they act. I will encourage them to try
bending the objects, notice how the items feel and how the items look. After
the students have explored each item individually I will ask them to discuss it
with their partner (person they are sitting next to). Students will then be able
to discuss with a partner what they observed about these objects.
By allowing students to simply note what they observe about these objects and
asking them to discuss what they noticed with a partner, they are able to
notice similarities and differences in feeling and appearance of these objects
without being given any direct background knowledge. I will ensure students
notice differences by asking, Does the button feel the same as the crayon?
(CFU) Does the button look the same as the crayon? etc.
After the students have made their own explorations of these items we will
talk about the items as a class. This will allow students to share what they
noticed about these objects and gather other ideas from different students. I
will then pass out several different sizes and colors and textures of paper.
Some of the pieces will be crumpled up, some folded neatly and others
covered in glitter. I will ask the students, Can you tell me what you notice
about the glitter paper? (CFU) What does it look like? What does it feel
like? (CFU)
I want you to write one thing you notice about each of these pieces of paper.
What does it feel like, what does it look like? (CFU) Students will now write

one property of each of the pieces of paper given. I will collect this piece of
paper from each student prior to moving on to our next subject.
Each student should have one thing they noticed about each piece of paper written down. If
the students do not have at least one property written down for each piece of paper I will

work with them separately. I will use the same items but will prompt their response by

asking specific questions such as, What color is the paper? What does the paper feel
