Lesson Plan- Science

Grade/Subject: Three/Science
Unit: Rocks and Minerals
Lesson Duration: 90 min
Date: December 7, 2015
KSAs: 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11
Outcomes From Alberta Program of Study
General Learner Expectations:
35 Demonstrate knowledge of materials that comprise Earths crust,
and demonstrate skill in classifying these materials.
Specific Learning Expectations:
Compare samples of various kinds of rock, and identify similarities and
differences.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Describe sedimentary rocks
2. Describe the 4 sedimentary rock processes
Assessments

Create a sandstone- this will show lithification (L.O. 1)

Make a web of sedimentary rock facts (L.O. 1)
Color and describe the processes of sedimentary rocks (L.O. 2)
Materials and Resources:
The making of Sedimentary rocks worksheet
Sedimentary rocks web worksheet
Sand
Epson Salt
Water
Dixie cups
Stir sticks
The Geology of the Earth: Forces, Rocks and Time video
Laptop
Preparation
Photocopy the rock sheets
Get the videos up and ready to run
Have the website for the sponge activity written down for the students
Have water and Epson salt and sand ready
A student can hand out the cups and I will come around with the sand
Modification/Accommodation
Assist the 3 boys or pair them up with others that can guide them
They will be put in groups as well as material will be discussed as a
class

Introduction (7 mins):
Today we are going to focus on the sedimentary rocks
Who remembers what a sedimentary rock is?- spend some time
discussing as a class
Sediment- the piece of broken down rock that get moved around and
then settle in another place.
Body ( mins):
6 mins The Geology of the Earth: of Forces, Rocks and Time video
30 mins- Property of Sedimentary rocks worksheet
o Using the video and the website (http://goo.gl/aPLmd) the
students will get into groups of 4 and add 6 facts to the web
o Each group will get 1 laptop to search the site- this is the site from
last computer class.
o After 15-20 mins we will come back as a class and I will have the
students write stuff in a web up on the board. I will write the
higher up ones.
20 mins- make sandstone
o Pass out the cups and stir sticks
o Have the students write their names on the cups with a sharpie
o Follow the sandstone making instructions attached
24 mins- Color and write the descriptions for the 4 parts of the
sedimentary rock process (See attached completed example)
Closure (5 mins):
Clean up and put everything away
What were the 4 processes that sedimentary rocks go through?
Tomorrow we will be learning more about igneous rocks.
Sponge Activity
Color and add a drawing of a sedimentary rock to their web worksheet.
