    TheAfricancultureisvariedandabundant.Itisaproductofdiversepopulations,andhas
    beenaffectedbybothinternalandexternalforces.DaisanecomesfromtheDemocraticRepublic
    ofCongoandmigratedtotheUSin2001duetoseriouscivilwarmenacesthatwerehaunting
    herhomevillageKinshasa.TheDemocraticRepublicofCongohasaverylargeandpowerful
    groupofrebelsthatopposesthecorruptgovernment,butduringtheyearshaschangedanditis
    nowharminginnocentpeople.Backin2001theywererecruitingyoungsoldiersfortheirmilitia
    againsttheirownwillsandDaisanesvillagewasnext,sosheandherfamilyhadtofleethe
    countryinspiredbythepreachofmormonmissionariesallocatedinCongo.Shecametothis
    countryasachild(5yearsold)withhermomandsiblings(herfathercameayearlater),andhas
    absorbedtheAmericanculturequitewell,thisasareasonofbeingpracticallyinUtahherwhole
    life.Sheisaveryintelligentyoungwomanthatspeaksfourlanguages(French,English,Swahili,
    andLingala),andisverydevotedtohercollegeclasses.Neverthelessshehasexperienced
    discriminationinherlife.
    Discriminationforhercomesasaresultofbeingaminorityandaforeigner.Sheisa
    blackfemalenonmormonfromAfrica,anddespitethefactshecametothiscountryatavery

    youngageshestillfindssomejudgementtowardsherfamily,thewayherparentsspeak(withan
    accent),thewaytheylook,theirsocialstatus,generalculturaldifferences,andsometimesbythe
    colorofherskin.
    DuringtheinterviewIwasverysurprisedthatsheandIhavesomuchincommoneven
    thoughwearefromdistantplaces.IamahispanicindividualfromBogot,Colombia,South
    America,andwebothhavesufferedtheconsequencesofcivilwarinourrespectivecountries.
    Colombiahasbeenatcivilwarformorethat50yearsnow,andrebelgroupshaveterrorizedthe
    innocentpopulationtoorecruitingyoungsoldierstofighttheirwar,extortingfamilieswith
    abduction,threats,forceddisplacementtobigcitiesandabroadleavingvillagesasghosttowns,
    andmanymorecrueltythatDaisanehasexperiencedtoo.Ourcountriesalsosharedtheproblems
    thathadarouseduetothegreedofpeopleandothercountriestowardsDiamondsinCongoand
    EmeraldsinColombia,corruption,payedbanditsanduseofviolenceformoneyandour
    country'snaturalresources.
    Duringtheinterviewwetalkedaboutourlives,shetoldmeaboutherafricancultureand
    howpeopleinCongotalkinlingalatobeformalandrespectelderswhileswahiliwasforfriends
    andcommonpeople.ShealsotoldmeherexperiencesintheUSregardinginteractionswith
    people.ShetoldmeUtahissafer,peoplearefriendly,butnotconcernedaboutyou.Peoplehere
    wouldsmileatyouandsometimessayhibuttheywouldneverbemoreinterestedinyourlife
    thanthat.neighborsarecoldinthewaythatshehaslivedhereformanyyearsbutdoesn'tknow
    wholivesinthenexthouse(andthishappenstometoo),peoplearejudgmental,sometimesby
    race,sometimesbylanguagebarriers.

    Thisinterviewwasagreatopportunityofacknowledgingnewcultures,fromdifferent
    continentsandactuallyrelatetothem.Daisaneisagreatpersonthatsometimesfeels
    underappreciatedbecauseofprejudiceandwrongbehaviorsofpeoplethatdontevenknowher
    andjustjudgebasedonsuperficialthings,andalsojudgeonraceandreligion.Andthisprejudice
    takesgreatsopportunitiesawayfromherpath,aswellasbetterlifestandardsforsheaher
    family.
    IreallyhopethatsomedayeverypersonintheUSwouldbejudgeforacareer,job
    opportunity,socialgroupbasedontheirrealqualificationsandnotsomeulteriorhiddenracist
    agenda,orxenophobia,evenreligiousprejudicethataffectadmissiontosomeuniversities,and
    somebenefits.
