RIP Walkthrough
In week 9, our writing class had the RIP presentation with another class, in
which my group created a horror film, and it was a great experience for me, both the
film and the process. For the RIP project, the genre is horror, and the medium is the
movie that we have been working on. The film was about a couple watching movie in
the living room, and then the girl notices the ambiguous message coming into the boy
phone. Finally she finds out that the boy is cheating on her and murders him because
of his betrayal. This film was aiming to remind the audiences (which were the
classmates in the presentation) that cheating is unacceptable in our lives and might get
punishment. The couple in the movie was set to be two normal college students in a
relationship in the contemporary society.
The audience could receive the message that the cheating behavior is not
acceptable and would get punishment. In the current world, relationship is always an
issue that bothers people, and cheating is a behavior that is usually condemned by
most people. Because of the resonance among the general public, it seems that the fate
of the cheating boyfriend is approved and even satisfied with the audience. Many
people may have encountered the similar issues, which is why the young people under
a current society full of open relationships can find some sympathetic response from
this film. So the death of the boyfriends could have been considered as the crucial part
in the movie. From the message we have sent to the audience, we hoped that the
audience were able to distinguish the ultimate purpose of this film, which is to

discourage the happening of betrayal among people.
The monster we created in the film, which the slasher girl, though murders her
boyfriend cruelly, can still stimulate the receptions among the audience due to her
emotional breakdown. As Noel Carroll mentioned in The Nature of Horror, we are
presuming that art-horror is an occurrent emotional state, such as undying envy. An
occurrent emotional state has both physical and cognitive dimensions. Broadly
speaking, the physical dimension is a matter of felt agitation (Carroll 54). The girl
appears in a normal condition at the beginning of the movie, until she finds out the
flirting message coming into her boyfriends phone, which makes her agitated,
desperate and finally triggers the monstrous figure inside of her. The horror movies
are categorized into horror genre because of the sudden unawareness and the symbolic
representation. In our film, the abrupt occurrence of the girl with creepy face is to the
unawareness of the audience. We put a lot of makeup on the actors neck to make it as
authentic as possible, and luckily, we got some great feedback by hearing the
audiences sounds of fear and nausea; though I have to admit that the makeup was
indeed very disgusting, we received some good reflections that proved the success of
our filmmaking. The horrible look showing up on the her face is a representation of
the manifestation of her evil self.
The trope for our horror film was the cruel and unusual death, in which there
were a few items and scenes showing the genre of horror of this film, such as, the
flickering of the light, the dropped knife and the creepy makeup on the girls face.
Among above, there was one scene that the boyfriend is pretending to be mad at the
girl for not trusting him, or maybe for his betrayal being found out, grabbing a knife,
and then drops it. The camera focused on the knife for a few seconds. Later on, the
girl seems to be calm down and picks up the knife, staring at it before putting it back.

The knife is an indication, telling the audience that something might happen related to
the tropecruel and unusual death. The audiences were able to sense that the girl
might turn creepy and do something extreme in the following scenes, and also applied
a gruesome atmosphere for the audiences. The boyfriends cheating behavior is
intolerable for the girl; she is in love with him but he is being unfaithful to the
relationship. Similar situation happened to the scene of the flickering light, which
keeps flashing until the sudden appearance of the girl with horrible face, holding the
same knife she picks up and stares at. These scenes are some of the parts that made
this movie a horror genre. Eventually, due to the abnormal personality and some
supernatural power, she cuts her boyfriend on the knife and kills him.
There were quite a lot items showing the historical context in the 21 century,
such as the TV, the newest iPhone, and the contemporary apartment houses. The
audience can have the feeling of the story in the film might actually happen in the real
life. Two characters in the film are quite typicalcollege students falling in love and
start a relationship, which seems to be very common.
For the individual contribution to this RIP project, I would rather define myself
as the director of this movie. The script was not as specific as we could directly apply
it to the film shooting, which required the overall consideration of the cameraman.
And holding the camera made me the responsibility to think carefully when and how
to shoot certain scenes. Since some scenes could not be shot in one day, so the next
time when we came to shooting, I watched the previous videos for several time to
make sure that I put the camera in the right place where it could catch up with the last
scene fluently.
