Different People, Different Lifes
Many points can be made from the story Everyday by David Levithan. Some readers may
consider it to be a story about love. But in my opinion its something more than that. It shows
that it doesnt matter what you look like, what really matters its who you are. To be more
accepting of others, not letting differences set them apart. Since the protagonist in the story A
does not have a gender or race who every day switches bodies. Immediately I have to figure out
who I amopening my eyes and discovering whether the skin on my arm is light or dark,
whether my hair is long or short, whether Im fat or thin, boy or girl, scarred or
smooth.(Levithan 1) Rhiannon a girl that A encountered, whom loves A for who he/she is or
what A will look like every day. Supporting the fact it doesnt matter what someone may look
like its whats inside that matters.
A who is the protagonist of this story switches every day from one body to another. Has
accepted that this how he/she will live. A no longer worries about what the body he/she inhabits
may look like. I am a drifter, and as lonely as that can be, it is also remarkably freeing. I will
never define myself in terms of anyone else.(Levithan 7) That is until A encounters a girl named
Rhiannon who has really caught As attention. After their relation develops Rhiannon
understands As situation. She loves A for who he/she is. But Rhiannon seems bothered that A
will never be there with for an entire day. Having to see different people as the same person,
someone she cannot directly show her love towards. As the story progresses Rhiannon seems to

show more interest when A is in a guys body. Which shouldnt bother A but it does. People are
rarely as attractive in reality as they are in the eyes of the people who are in love with them. This
is, I suppose, as it should be.(Levithan 34) Falling in love with someone just because of their
looks is wrong; because youre not loving them for who they are, youre loving them for their
looks. If you truly loved someone looks should be the last thing you should worry about.
A would often inhabit a girls, guys and gays bodies. When in their body A would kiss
guys and girls without hesitation. Proving that A has no gender preference. Which is a good
thing, A is able to see a persons worth and not worry about their looks. In my experience,
desire is desire, love is love. I have never fallen in love with a gender. I have fallen for
individuals.(Levithan 142) Strongly supporting that it doesnt matter what gender you may be,
you can love whoever you want to love, it doesnt matter if they are different as long as you love
them for who they. A witnesss people protesting against the gays. I don't get this at all. It's like
protesting the fact that some people are red-haired.(Levithan 142) A questions peoples motives
and reasons for protesting against them rather than supporting them. This will only make them
feel different and unwanted. What are they trying to achieve. Just because their different doesnt
mean they should be treated differently, since deep inside they all share the same interest. No one
wants to be treated different and unfairly. But people seem to like putting others down in order
to make them feel better about themselves.
I had yet to learn that when it came to gender, I was both and neither.(Levithan
254) Having no gender or race. A has greater understanding from both sides. Knowing what its
like to be a girl and guy. No gender is superior to the other. If other people see you differently,
youll end up seeing them differently, too.(Levithan 150) If everyone were to experience life
just like A does, then their point of view would change drastically. No one would judge each

other by their looks anymore; there would be no discrimination against each other. People would
be more accepting of one another. Rather than comparing their similarities they focus on their
differences, on what makes them different from one another. In todays society looks is a big
importance, which gives off the wrong idea for the future generation. Looks shouldnt be
important at all. A person can be good looking on the outside but rotten to the core. Focusing on
peoples similarities would bring us together making us realize that maybe were not so different
after all. But instead society focuses on differences which only sets us more apart from one
another.
Every Day strongly supports the idea that it doesnt matter what you look like, its whats
inside that matters. Society has set an image of what a person should look like, and not meeting
up to those expectations is a bad thing. Putting down those who dont meet up to those
expectations. Living by those standards is unacceptable. One should be open minded about
things, and accepting of who they are and of others differences. Rather than putting down people
for being different. Every Day also supports equality among genders and different races. That
just because we look different doesnt mean we should be treated different. We may look
different, but that doesnt mean we are different. Especially among gays and colored people who
greatly discriminated, and treated unfairly by many. Just because of the way they act and the way
they look. Many may agree with my understanding, others may disagree with me. But its the
way we think that brings us close or sets us apart.
