Matter & Its

States of
Change
By:

Begin

In this presentation you will be learning about matter and

the three states matter can take. Please begin by
completing the section labeled matter and complete the
question in that section. Then afterward feel free to
complete the sections Gases, Solids, and liquids in any
order you wish but be sure to answer the question(s) in
each section. After you have completed all sections read
the exercise and answer the questions at the end.

Matter
Matter is everything, the scientific
definition is anything that takes up
space or has mass

Matter has three states that it is

in naturally. Solid, Liquid and gas.

Matter is made up of particles, the

energy in these particles is what
determines what state of matter the
Matter is in.

Who

Matter transitions from one state to

another according the freedom of the
particles in the matter. The transition
goes from solid to liquid then liquid to
gas. Matter can transition in the opposite
direction as well.

Ice is a great example to use to

show the transitions. Ice is a solid,
but if you heat it, or add energy
then it turns into a liquid. Which is
water, and if you continue to heat
it, it will turn to steam which is a
gas.

Back

It is not necessary for matter

to go through this step by
step process, sometimes it
can skip a step given enough
energy. This process is called
Sublimination.

To learn about the specific states of matter go

through and read and answer the questions in
each state listed below.

Gases

Liquids

Solids

Solids
Examples of solids are Ice,
rocks, anything that has a
definite volume and a define
shape.

Particles in a solid are stationary

they sit next to each other in a
specific shape. They are packed
together with hardly any room in
between themselves.

next

Which picture best fits a solid?

A

If the particles in solids are

given enough energy they will
began to move further from
one another and become a
liquid. This process is called
melting.

To learn about the specific states of matter go

through and read and answer the questions in
each state listed below.

Liquids

Examples of
liquids would be
water, Molten
rock or any
matter that does
not have an
exact shape but
still has an exact
measurable
amount of
matter.

The particles in liquids

have space enough
between the that they
may move around each
other but not enough
space that they arent
touching. This is haw
water can flow.

next

Which of the following best

describes liquids
A

Definite volume with and indefinite

shape

Indefinite volume with an indefinite

shape

Definite volume with a definite

shape

Indefinite volume with a definite

shape

Water is the middle state

of matter, unlike the
other two states it can go
in either direction of the
transitions between
states of matter while
gasses and solids can
only move in one.

Back

Gases

Menu

Gases
The most know gas
is the air we
breathe. Gasses
have no definite
shape and no
definite volume.
Here is a picture of
air.

The particles
in a gas have
spaces
between
them that are
larger than
liquids giving
them no
exact volume

next

How do you turn a liquid into a gas?

A

Ask it nicely

Cool it down

Heat it up

Run electricity
through it

Gases
To make gas transition into a
liquid you would have to
remove that energy.

The particles in gasses

have much more energy
than in liquids or solids
making them move around
franticly.

To learn about the specific states of matter go

through and read and answer the questions in
each state listed below.

those sections correctly then continue to the exercise, if not return

A scientist is wondering if something is wrong with the snow this winter and
he needs your help. This year the weather has been very dry and snowless.
But last night, for the first time this winter, it snowed.

next

The scientist took the snow, balled it up and then holds a lighter to it.
To his surprise, the snow doesnt melt.

next

The scientist wants to know if the snow if fake.

Your job is to answer his question and to explain to him
what has happened to the snow.

Question one answer

If your answer is similar this one then go back and click
the next button if not then review and try again.
The snow ball is melting. It is going
through a process called sublimation.
It is turning strait into a gas without
becoming a liquid first, giving it the
illusion that its not melting.

Scientists Second Question

Is it possible for sublimation to occur in the reverse order.
Example: (A gas turning strait into a solid without
becoming a liquid first) answer true or false.

Answer for question two

If your answer was false, then please review. The correct
answer is true, sublimation can happen in the reverse
order if the gas is cooled fast enough to return to a solid.
