Subject/ Topic/ Theme:

Friction

I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
The main focus of this lesson is to apply the knowledge of friction that the students have learned in the
pervious two lessons to various sports. Inquiring how friction affects these sports, what tools athletes use
to either increase the amount of friction or decrease the amount of friction.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan?
The unit is on friction and its affect on moving and resting objects.
What are your objectives for this lesson?
1) Identify friction as a force that changes the way an object moves.
2) The students will connect personal experience with factual knowledge about friction
3) The students will collaborate to create a poster with specific instructions.
4) The students as a group will present their sport and the affects that friction has on that particular sport.
5) W.3.2- Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
6) L.3.6- Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and domainspecific words and phrases, including those that signal spatial and temporal relationships.

-Ability to recall information about Friction from the previous two lessons.
- Ability to collaborate with a group to come up with a final product.
-I will be assessing informally throughout by asking comprehension
questions, to pose inquiry based thinking from my students.
-I will be assessing the students presentations, how well they can
articulate the idea of Friction and its connection to their sport.
-Summative at the end of the Unit, I will be assessing the students with a
quiz.
Poster Paper (one for each sport)
YouTube video
Golf Club and Glove (any hands on sport example, golf is what I had)
Microphones for the students who are presenting
- The students will sit on the floor and on the desks, close to the front of the
room and then they will be broken off into groups where they will be spread
out around the room. To finish the students will go back to their seats for
the ESPN report.

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
1. Discuss Friction and our tests that we have done the past two days
- Can someone tell me what our definition of friction is? (When two things rub
together)
- We will talk about this more tomorrow, but from yesterday can one person
raise their hand and tell me which surface was the hardest to move? With
what surface did you have to use the most washers? / With what surface did
you use the least amount of washer to move it?

Developm
ent

The block with the rubber bands was the hardest to move was that
because their was more friction or less friction? (MORE)
- The bock with the wax paper was the easiest to move was that because
there was more friction or less friction? (LESS)
2. Something that I just learned or connected was that FRICTION affects sports!
There are times in sports when its important to increase the amount of
friction, for example when youre trying to catch a ball in football, receivers
might use a glove to help them increase the friction make their hand more
gripppy so they can catch the ball easier. (This is an example when friction
is a good thing!) or in baseball when baseball players wear cleats, the knobs
at the bottom of a cleat reduce the amount of friction between the baseball
players foot and the ground. (an example when you want less friction)
*Show examples of a Cleat and a Glove
3. Explain how we are going to watch maybe a new sport for some of you but a
sport called Curling it is an Olympic sport and the whole game is based off
of Friction! Increasing the amount of friction to slow the puck down or
decreasing the amount of friction to make it go faster!
4. Show video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miB7HzUvmM0
5. Show poster on Curling, talk through the various aspects that I am looking
for.
- Title
- Names
- Picture with labels (draw the player in their environment)
- Bullet points of how it affects their sport (More friction or less friction)

6. Explain the sports, have a whole group brainstorming session on each sport
- Think about anytime in your sport where two things come into contact (think
about hands and feet!)
- Gymnastics: powder on hands to help increase the friction between the
gymnast and the bar
- Football: Glove on hand to help catch the ball, cleats help reduce the friction
- Soccer: Goalie gloves help increase the friction, cleats help reduce the
friction
- Baseball; gloves for batting help increase the friction, cleats help reduce the
friction
7. Explain that each group will present their sport to the class as apart of the
ESPN sports report with Me as the host and the groups as the quests
8. Divide up groups and instruct them where they will be working. (4 groups)
9. Circulate and Facilitate conversation: Make sure they are thinking about the
reduction or the increase in frication, will it make it easier or harder? Why
would you want to increase the friction? Etc.
Closure
10. ESPN Sports report: On todays ESPN Sports we have ____________ team, please
tell me about how friction affects your sport
