Emily Corning

Milwood Elementary 1st grade

Science Lesson
Common Core:
E.ES.01.21-Compare daily changes in the weather related to wind.
E.ES.01.31- Identify tools that might be used to measure wind speed and direction.
E.ES.o1.32- Observe and collect data of weather conditions over a period of time.
S.IP.01.11- Make purposeful observations of the natural world using the
appropriate senses.
Unit Outcome:
TLW: Make wind observations using our senses.
TLW: Be able to know whether it is breezy, calm, wind, or windy outside.
Lesson outcome:
TLW: be able to make wind observations using their senses.
TLW: know what the key terms mean: breezy, calm, wind, and windy.
TLW: Be able to look at a flag or trees outside to tell whether or not it is breezy,
calm, or windy outside.
Rational/Purpose of the Lesson:
The students will be able to look outside and can tell you whether or not it is breezy,
calm, or windy outside. This also helps with weather temperature, because we know
if its windy out and not calm, that the wind is going to make it cooler than if it were
calm.
Assessment:
Use the schoolyard outing, class discussion, and journal entry to assess the students
ability to make wind observations using their senses. Use the journal entry to assess
the students ability to demonstrate scientific concepts through illustrations. Use the
summary discussion and journal entry to assess the students understanding of
weather related to the wind.
Resources/Materials Required:

White bored/markers/eraser

Weather watchers observation chart

Book: The Wind Blew-Like a Windy Day
Flag-outside
Science Journals

Introduction/Grabber:
Weve been talking a lot about weather outside, and the wind. Did you know there
are different words we use for the word wind? Think for a minute about what other
words we use to describe the wind.
Procedures:

Read: Like a Windy Day and The Wind Blew

Brain storm experiences the students have had with the wind.
We are going to go outside to make weather observations using our senses
(Sight, hearing, touch)
Establish a boundary for the outdoor exploration.
Read the activity page to students- what evidence or wind they think they will
observe?
Go outside and sit in a circle in the grass.
Discuss wind observations using our senses.
Go and look at the flag. Discuss what the flag is doing.
Go back inside.
Write a journal entry about what you observed.
Turn and talk to a partner about your writing.
Discuss wind speed. (calm, breezy, windy)
Go back to seats and work on page 12-13 in your science blue journal book,
Go back to carpet and close lesson.

Homework:
No homework for this lesson.
Closure:
While we were outside using our senses to observe wind, what are some things
that you observed (pull students names to answer)? While looking at the flag what
would you say the wind speed was: calm, breezy, or windy. Now that we know we
can look at a flag to predict wind speed, tomorrow Im going to teach you about
what meteorologist use to predict wind speed.
