Assignment 1

A.

When reviewing the United States census website there are many interesting facts about

San Bernardino County. To begin, I viewed the race and ethnicity statistics and found that the
highest population in California is white people with a total of 77 percent; they are followed by
Hispanics with 51.4 percent and Whites not Hispanics with 30.6 percent. I found surprising that
African Americans were not within the top three, but they do come in fourth with 9.5 percent
followed by Asians with 7.3 percent. The lowest percentages in population in San Bernardino
County were Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander with 0.5 percent, right under American Indians whom
had a total of 2 percent.
To understand a little bit more of what the Census means by race and ethnicity, it helped
to be able to define and understand what those terms are defined as. Race is essentially what the
world makes the term race to be. It doesnt have to do with ones genetics or biological make
up, but how socially you are perceived. Ethnicity is something that is distinctive to a group of
people. It can be something like religious beliefs, food, jobs, and values. And Culture is
essentially who we are. The little things that shape us like, knowledge and experiences.
In the county of San Bernardino, there tends to be more of a female population with 50.2
percent compared to men whom are 44.8 percent of the population of San Bernardino County.
Within that statistic, the ages of both men and female in the San Bernardino County is 7.3
percent is children under the age of 5, 27.2 percent are within the ages of 6-18, and 10.3 percent
are within the ages of 65 and above. And lastly, when looking at the health outcomes when it
comes to household demographics, a married household with children in San Bernardino County
is at 156,690 are more likely to go the doctors and have health insurance because they are a
double income family. When a single mother with children in the county is at 56,038 are more

likely to find it difficult to attend the medic and pay for insurance, which would result in more
health problems.
B.

Within the County of San Bernardino in February 2011, the top 5 disease were

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea within the ages of 20 to 24, Hepatitis C and B within ages of 45-54,
and HIV within the ages of 20-34. According the U.S. Census Bureau: Stat and County Quick
Facts, within the households of the county of San Bernardino the median household income was
54,090 compared to California median of 61,094. The difference between the two is 7,004 that
San Bernardino households are getting less, and is much needed by the households.
Within the charts that were viewed called, Adults with Health Insurance by Gender and
People with a source of Health by Gender, females are higher in percentage that men to have
insurance. This discovery leads me to believe it has to do with the fact that females may need
more attention due to reproduction. And lastly, within some of the red indicators for the County,
adults with diabetes was at a score of 10.6 percent, when the HP 2020 set a standard of 8.6.
Adults who are obese were at 33.2 percent, and the target was 30.5. And Infant Mortality Rate
was at a percentage of 6.7 when the HP 2020 standard was at 6.0. Thus the County of San
Bernardino has to find was to lower their percentages in those areas.
C.

When averaged, San Bernardino County didnt do as bad as I thought it would which

surprised me! It averaged below all other counties, except for percentage in poverty, uninsured,
and foreign born, which was understandable, as San Bernardino is a poor county. However being
the largest county it surprised me to only have 186.3 doctors per 100,000 population, when the
average for all other counties was 252.3, in areas much smaller and less needful than San
Bernardino.
