Closure
(conclusion,
culmination,
wrap-up)

Put up definitions of cause and effect. This

is important to remember!
We are going to read If You Give a Dog a
Donut again to refresh our memories of
cause and effect.
Read book, and have them repeatedly
identify cause and effect.
If it seems like the students need more
cause and effect examples in books, pull
out more Laura Numeroff books again.
Now we are going to do a worksheet like
we did last time with cause and effect but
you will have to make up your own ideas.
I will do one as an example:
I stole my brothers toy so I got in trouble.
Have students share examples with each
other.
If time, play a cause and effect game. Sit
in a circle. Have one start: If you give a
first grader a _____ then (next person)
_______ and if they (next person) ______
then (next person) ________ and so on.
Next time, we will be writing our own
story that follows this same cause and
effect pattern that Laura Numeroffs
books cover. Lets brainstorm a subject
and a thing our subject desires for our
book.

Do you understand the pattern we have to follow to

make our own book?
Have you thought of any sentences we can create
using cause and effect in our book?

Students listen to the book.

Students do the worksheet

Students share examples with each other

Students play game

Students brainstorm a character.

Students answer questions

Your reflection about the lesson, including evidence(s) of student learning and engagement, as well as ideas for improvement
for next time. (Write this after teaching the lesson, if you had a chance to teach it. If you did not teach this lesson, focus on the
process of preparing the lesson.)

After the pre-assessment results came back before my unit started, I decided we needed two days worth of
cause and effect time. Its a very important topic relating to Laura Numeroffs books and in turn my unit. We
read If You Give a Dog a Donut again and then sat on the floor in a circle to play a game. I explained that I
wanted them to follow the same kind of pattern that we have identified in Numeroffs books. I started with if
you give a first grader fruitsnacks and had the next person fill in the blank. They caught on very quickly
and we went around the whole circle with no problems! I was so proud of them. With out additional time, we
voted on what the character should be in our class story and what they should have. We settled on if you give
a cheetah chocolate.
