Discourse Community Response

Communication is a tool that has been used since the beginning of time to
express how a person feels about a certain situation or idea. As humans began
to develop into a more advanced population, people developed languages and
words to achieve a level of understanding between themselves. Time progressed
and humanity began to create different languages and words, broadening their
intellectual abilities and creating dialects that were particular to a certain region.
Today, we have a countless amount of languages and in each certain regions
there are communities that use these languages in different forms. These
communities have a certain discourse that pertains to the specific region and this
communication makes us the diverse humans that we are today. Throughout this
week, I have learned that even a person that lives on the west side has different
phrases and lingos that they use to communicate a certain idea. These
discourses create diversity and help us understand that each region is different
from the other, creating a worldly and interesting community in each place.
Each and every one of us are part of a singular discourse community such
as groups of friends or families, sports teams, religious groups and individual
schools. In my group of friends, we communicate with familiarity and trust. The
subjects that you speak of with friends, may not be appropriate to speak of with

teachers or peers. Friends are a group of people that share your common
interests regularly, speak with the same lingos and phrases. Similar to many
people, I have various amounts of groups of friends, such as those from school,
religious groups, and sports. My goals, is to create a support system in each
different social environment and create lasting bonds with people that have my
common goals and dreams.
As a part of a sports team, your teammates are the most important people
that surround you. These people become your support system, as well as
coaches which motivate and inspire their players. The type of communication
that is involved in a sports team are very distinct, depending on what sport you
practice. As a tennis player, we use words such as fault or out when a ball lands
outside of the indicated lines, ace when a serve goes inside the service box and
is untouched by the other player, and winner when a person hits a ball inside the
court and is untouched by the other player. These words are understood by
tennis players and unknown to a football or soccer player. As a tennis player and
athlete, my goal is to achieve success and create a bond of confidence and
support that comes from trying to achieve the common goal of winning a coveted
title and giving your 110% in a competitive sport that you love.
In a religious group, a person usually tries to achieve inner peace and
tranquility. My personal religious group is called Reino and is a part of the
worldwide Regnum Christi movement. As a member, I try to achieve a deeper
spiritual relationship with God and my beliefs. As a community of believers, we
speak in a respectful manner when we speak about our faith because religion

should be referred to with reverence and the utmost respect. This group of
people is a calm group that always looks for the best in others and has a very
deep level of trust and familiarity that is unique and makes it distinct from all the
other groups.
As a new member of the UTEP community I have found that the small
community that I have yet to discover completely is very inviting and welcoming.
As a community of students, we communicate with friendliness and respect.
Some schools may have a different atmosphere but UTEP has given me an aura
of trust and has been an inviting community from the moment that I stepped on
campus. The forms of communication are usually electronically, because of the
technological advances of the time and the effectiveness and rapidness that a
quick message or e-mail has. One common goal that I believe that each student
has is the goal to succeed. As dreamers and risk-takers I believe that each
student on campus wants to achieve greatness and feel satisfied and
accomplished when we receive our diplomas.
I believe that it is truly important to know how to communicate in each
setting that you are put into. The different groups that a person pertains to, make
the person an individual and help him or her become the original individual that
they are. The forms of communication in each individual group differ greatly and
they help the group come together and create trust and bonds that may last ages
after. These groups help a person grow and mature as an individual and are
important to learn how to communicate in future settings that may be unknown.
As humans, we always crave communication and being part of a community,

satisfies our desires to listen and be listened to, creating bonds that are an
essential part of a persons personal growth and life.
