Context
I am teaching in a similar contextan Intensive English Program (IEP) at the University of
Illinois: Champaign-Urbana. This semester I am teaching a high intermediate level class (level
500 out of 700). My class is very diverse with students from China, Saudi Arabia, Brasil and other
countries around the World. Some of my students have been here for a year; some of my
students just arrived to the US this semester. This course in academic listening is a required
class in the IEP curriculum and is for prospective graduate-level students.

Listening Objectives
Students will demonstrate the skill of listening for the main idea in the lecture
Students will be able to use abbreviations and symbols to take notes effectively
Students will be able to convert their notes into summaries

Pre-listening (20 minutes)
Discussion Question(s):
o How do you typically motivate yourself in your academic studies?
o What ways have been ineffective in motivating you?
Vocabularywrite on the board and ask students to define. Then add necessary
information that was missed to the definition. Keep definitions on the board during
the listening activity.

Listening (20 miuntes)
Teach Note taking strategies
o Pass out effective note taking handout to students
o You do not need to understand every word. In the same way, you do not need
to write down every word. Write down only the important points in the
lecture.
o Use abbreviation and symbols to allow for quicker writing speeds.
Give example of abbreviations and symbols that replace longer words.
o Pay attention to the differences in intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
o Listen for the signaling clue of summing up to discover the main point.

Post-listening (20 minutes)
Discussion question(s):
o What was the speakers main point in the lecture?
o What were the main finding in terms of productivity with intrinsic and
extrinsic motivation?
o What are some examples that prove the greater benefit of intrinsic
motivation?
Rewrite notes into a summary of the lecture
o After the discussion, have the students write a one-page summary of what
they learned from the lecture. Have the students turn this summary in at the
end of class to assess their usage of the note taking strategies.
