The topic I have chosen is the legalisation of marijuana in the UK. I think
that this topic is very relevant these days because after United States
Bob Marley, a very famous reggae singer that used to say Herb is the healing of a
nation, alcohol is the destruction. This is very accurate statement because marijuana
is more healthy option than alcohol. It is estimated that more than 8000 people died of
excessive alcohol consumption in 2013 in UK alone
(http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/subnational-health4/alcohol-related-deaths-in-theunited-kingdom/2013/index.html ). There has been no deaths recorded regarding
excessive marijuana usage. From that article it is safe to assume that marijuana is a
lot safer then alcohol in terms of death caused by excessive use of the substance.
Larry King, TV and Radio host once said I had four chiefs of police on, and the
question raised was: If neither one was legal, marijuana or liquor, and you could only
legalise one, what would you legalise? And they all answered at the same time
marijuana, because they had never seen a murder committed while someone was
under the influence of marijuana.
There are many issues why marijuana should remain illegal in the UK, but health is the
one brought up the most. NHS says that Even hard-core smokers can become
anxious, panicky, suspicious or paranoid, referring to one of the side effects of
marijuana. They also protest against it because of the large impact it has on a person
while driving. (http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/local-news/arguments-againstlegalisation-cannabis-5782967 )
After reading the facts and delving into the topic in my private time, I personally think
that marijuana should not remain illegal. As explained in the article and the source
table, the positive effects of the drug massively outshine the negative ones and the
fact that no one has died of straight up marijuana usage supports that. People may
argue that it affects driving but so does alcohol which was proven to be far more
dangerous than marijuana. To conclude, marijuana should be legal because it is not
dangerous to you and has many health applications.
