BertHardywasbornonmay19th1913inblackfriars,ontheedgeofthecityof
london.Hardystayedtruetothefactthathebecameaphotographerbyaccident.He
leftschoolattheage14andbegantogolookforwork.Hehadappliedfordifferentjobs
buteachoneofthemturnedhimdown.Whenhereturnedhomeaftergettingdeniedhis
auntcheeredhimupbytellinghimtherewasaBoywantedsignatthecentralphoto
service.Hehadgottenthejobandstartedtogoaroundgatheringfilmsthatneededto
bedevelopedforthechemists,lateronhelearnedhowtodevelopandprinthimself.
An
avidcyclist,hetookhisfirstphotographsforaBicyclemagazine.Helaterwrotethat
usingthecamera"asanextensionofmyeyescamenaturallytome."
Fromtherehe
metaphotographer,GeorgeMoore,whoshowedhimwhatcouldbedonewithonlya
smallcamera.Attheageof23heboughthimselfaleicacommittinghimselftosmall
cameraworkunliketherestofstreetphotographerswhowerestillusinglargeformat
equipment.Healsonevertookupothertechnicaladvanceslikelightmeters,range
findersorflashbulbsbutheseemedtobethemasteratusingavailablelight.Berthad

payofanarmysergeantalsophotographedtheliberationofParis.Healsowenttotake
picturesoftheKoreanwarandVietnamwarwhichiswherepeoplethinkhisfamerisen.
OtherthanpicturesofthewarHardyalsotookphotosofpostwarbritainandjusttook
photosofpeopleatworkandpeopleatplay.Hardyspicturesweremeanttoshow
peoplewhathewasseeingthroughthelense.EverywhereIlookandmostofthetimeI

Hardysworkgivesoffasenseofgreattimesandjusthavingfunnomatter
whereyouare.Hisworkalsogivesyouthefeelingofsadnessandhopeandasenseof
duty.WhenIlookathisphotographsIfeelcompelledtokeeplookingtowonderwhatis
happeninginhisphotosandwhyhisphotosarethewaytheyare.Ifeelheisshowing
somethingpeopledon'treallyseeorstoptonotice.InawayHardy'sworktomeseems
simpleyeteyecatching,Isaythisbecauseevenifthereisnotmuchgoingonhis

photostellastoryespeciallyhiswarphotos.Hisphotosofferarareinsightintothe
everydaylivesofordinarypeopleinpostwarBritain.WhenIlookathiswarphotosIdo
feelthesenseofduty.Thepeopleinthephotographhaveandthesadnesswarhas
affectedthepeople.ButanotherthingIfeelisthejoythesoldiershaveworkingtogether
andjusthavingfuntogether.Ilearnedthatyourcameraislikehavinganothereye,one
thatseeseverythinginaclearpicture.AnotherthingIlearnedthatevenifyoudon't
havegoodlightingandnothingreallybigishappeningyoucanstilltakeawonderful
photo.
