Description of Activity:
Warm-up:
Class will begin by having students participate in the warm up activity of categories.
Examples of said activity can include, but are not limited to, Students with a m in their
first name do 10 jumping jacks, Students born in the month of October run in place for 10
seconds Students with brown eyes hop on one foot 8 times, Students inside the Erma
Byrd Center pat your head while jumping up and down 15 times.
Activity:
Will begin activity with a look at our display board and definition of what a locomotor
skill is and list different examples of them. Student volunteers will be asked to show their
understanding of each skill.
Locomotor skills: A category of motor skills. They are a group of movements in
which the feet move the body from one place to another. Children usually learn these
skills in this particular order: WALKING, RUNNING, HOPPING, JUMPING,
SKIPPING, GALLOPING, SLIDING (a sideways gallop), and LEAPING.
Polyspots (lily pads) will be randomly set out in designated activity area. (NOTE:
There will not be enough lily pads for all students.) Students will begin by walking

around the general area making sure to use open areas and to avoid crowding other
students. When the words RIBBIT, RIBBIT are spoken, each student will attempt to
find an open lily pad.
Those students that did not find a lily pad will come together in a huddle and decide the
next locomotor movement that students on a lily pad will follow. Students in the huddle
will recite loud enough for all to hear, LITTLE FROG, LITTLE FROG PLEASE (insert
locomotor movement) OFF MY LILY PAD! Activity will continue in this manner as
time allows.
** This activity is designed to assess whether or not students recognize and can
correctly perform the various locomotor skills. **
Adaptations for Students with Movement or Health Concerns:
Students who may have difficulties my move directly from one lily pad to another in lieu
of through the general space to increase their chances of finding an open lily pad.
Safety Precautions:
Students will be instructed to move to open areas of the designated activity area to avoid
crowding and/or injury to themselves or others. Students will also be asked to conduct
themselves in a manner in which to avoid pushing, shoving, and/or kicking other students
off of their lily pads as this will not be tolerated by teachers. Students that cannot
follow these safety precautions will not have the opportunity to participate which will
directly affect their grade.
