10/13 Exploration

Due in class on Thursday, 10/15. Please complete your work on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Suppose that all 10 single digits are written in the font shown below.

a. Which four digits are symmetric about a horizontal line through the middle?
b. What three-digit numbers are symmetric about a horizontal line through the
middle? You may use each digit more than once in total, but only once in each
three-digit number.
c. Of the three-digit numbers found in part b), which are also symmetric about a
vertical line through the middle? Explain your thinking.
2. On a piece of graph paper, let A = (2; 4), B = (4; 5), and C = (6; 1). Your graph should
look similar to ABC shown at right. Draw three new triangles as follows:
i.
PQR has P = (11; 1), Q = (10;1), and R = (6; 1);
ii.
KLM has K = (8; 10), L = (7; 8), and M = (11; 6);
iii.
TUV has T = (2; 6), U = (0; 5), and V = (2; 9).
These triangles are not obtained from ABC by applying vector translations. Instead,
each of the appropriate transformations is described by one of the suggestive names
reflection, rotation, or glide-reflection. Decide which is which, with justification.

3. Self-similar objects are made up of smaller copies of themselves and appear the
same under magnification. The Sierpinski Triangle is an example of a self-similar
shape made up of equilateral triangles. Are squares self-similar? Are hexagons?
Justify your answer by experimenting with drawing self-similar objects from those
shapes.

4. In the set of figures below, sides of equal length are indicated by a | or a ||.

a. Give a name for each figure.

b. Which figures have only one line of symmetry? Draw the lines on each such
figure.
c. Which figures have exactly two lines of symmetry? Draw the lines on each
such figure.
d. Are there any figures with more than four lines of symmetry? If so, which
figures?
e. Which of the three types of symmetry (reflection, rotation, translation) is
referred to in this problem?
5. Three squares are placed next to each other as
shown. The vertices A, B, and C are collinear. Find
the dimension
n
.
Challenge Extension:
Replace the lengths 4 and 7

by
m
and
k
, respectively. Express
k
in terms of
m
and
n
.
