Regardless of the artist you listen to, music has a extraordinary ability to evoke emotion
in the listener. Scientists are trying to music as a factor to understand brain function as a whole.
There were three studies implemented, the goal of them was to discover what chemical processes
collide when we put our headphones on. Patients who were about to undergo surgery were
arbitrarily assigned a piece of music or prescribed anti-anxiety drugs; the patients who listened to
music had less anxiety than the ones who took drugs. Music is a less expensive and less
deteriorating alternative to drugs. Another study done involved the activity in the nucleus
Accumbens and the superior temporal gyrus, which is an indicator the predicts whether or not
you enjoy the music youre listening to. Any given neurochemical can have different functions
depending on the area of the brain. Music can be a tool to view the function of a healthy brain, it
can help us gain insights on neurological and psychiatric problems. There was a study where
participants were given the same piece of music to listen to find out what the similarities are in
our brain patterns. The results showed regions involving movement, attention, planning and
memory were all active while listening to music. The interesting part of this study was that these
brain regions dont have anything to do with the auditory processing. That means when humans
listen to music, there are a lot of functions in action at once.

Do ever feel like your recollection of memory could be better? According to experts
music can boost memory. The hippocampus is one of the many areas that is stimulated while
listening to music. The hippocampus deals with long term memory, music helps emulate
emotions which in turn Spatial reasoning is defined as the ability to reason depiction,
measurement, navigation and shape accurately. With the help of music specifically piano music
you have the ability to increase your spatial reasoning IQ points by as much as 9. Mozarts
symphony has a special effect which gives the listener a more enhanced and engaged focus.
Stress is a main factor in job world, instead of taking over-the-counter pills listen to
music instead. In a study published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences, patients who listened to
music (instead of taking the usual anti-anxiety drugs) demonstrated lower levels of cortisol: a
hormone that brings about stress. Individuals who experience side effects of a stroke can now
feel relief because music can repair the damage parts associated with language. Music is
especially helpful in victims of left-sided brain injury, with symptoms such as the inability to
speak. In fact, therapists treat such patients with a program called Melodic Intonation. Here,
the patient is prodded to sing until he can talk once again. It helps the mind correlate the tunes
with verbalisms once again.

Seizures are physical manifestations that arise from abnormal electrical activities in the
brain, by listening to music you can eradicate epilepsy from your life completely. Specifically,
Mozarts music emits calming sounds which decreases the activity of significant seizures.
Research suggests that listening to music in the background prior to performance a task actually
helps increase cognitive functions such as memory and attention by increasing arousal and
mood. And seemingly, it doesnt matter if you like the music or not but it seems that music with
just instruments helps people perform better than vocal music.

Its odd to for so many people to be so consumed with music as it is the product
meaningless tonal patterns. In the book Childhoods End by Arthur C. Clarke, the intelligent
aliens are brought down to earth to listen to a concert. The aliens listened to the whole concert
patiently and seemed to enjoy it so much they praised the composer on his great ingenuity. So
why do combined pieces of random tones and sounds make such a great impact on our society?
Well thats the question that Schopenhauer addresses, music has no concepts and no power of
representation. Another musical philosopher states that we listen to music with our muscles by
actually embodying the music. The subconscious feet tapping accompanied by music is natural
but can also become threatening if there is an overflow of music into the motor system.

The initial purpose of music was supposed to bring people together because it has a
communal effect. People enjoy themselves around music, music has been existent since the
primal ages. Currently there is a rift between the A-list MCs and the not so popular but
extremely talent composers. This in turn has people listening to one mainstream sound, creating
with individuals who prefer a better quality and taste in music to dislike the mainstream sounds.
Concerts emulate a collective excitement and bonding of music which is why a concert attracts
so many people. A concert actually presents a unity of nervous systems, meaning people feed off
of each others emotions.
Music has such an immense impact over our society today, as humans we are constantly
surrounded by it. It has such a profound effect on the brain that some of the connections and
activity still have not been discovered. This passage shines light on the fact that not all people
react the same to music and a little about the history of music.

The cerebral cortex, is the largest part of the human brain, it can be divided as the left and
right hemispheres. The right brain deals with information in an intuitive, creative and imaging
manner. The left hemisphere processes the verbal and mathematical information. Music has the
ability to alter a persons state of consciousness, it can shift an individuals perception of virtual
time. Due to the fact the music is nonverbal it triggers the right hemisphere but the verbalization
of words forces the brain to involve the left hemisphere as well. Robert Zatorre discovered that

Nutakki1

imagining music can activate the auditory cortex similar to actually listening to music.
Imagining music also stimulates the music cortex that means a person has the ability to hear
music when its not actually playing.
Music increases the production of brain waves which tends to correlate with creative.
High creative people have different pattern of brain waves than non-creative individuals. The
Alpha brain waves that carry creativity, big bursts of alpha waves induce creativity. Theta waves
deal with process of dreaming, learning, and relaxation. Music enhances both theta and alpha
waves making the brain stimulate creativity.
I had no knowledge that music encouraged creativity, much less the specific waves that
make it possible. Music brings together both right and left hemisphere, it is outstanding
considering this such a complex process. This passage gives information on the specific
processes that are activated by music.

Due to the increased technological advancements there are computers all over the
workplace. We use music as a way to lift our boredom when we are focusing on work. Since we
are constantly surrounded by technology we become inseparable to music. Music make repetitive
tasks more enjoyable, music can increase efficiency in tasks that require redundancy. A study
shows the assembly line workers showed signs of increased happiness and efficiency while
listening to music (Ciotti). Currently the thesis is that the improved mood from listening to your

favorite music increases your productivity. Participants of the study who listened to background
music reached a higher productivity level.
You can also treat music as a teleportation device, music can help zone out the chaos of
open-office workplace. Dr. Lesiuks research proved that people who listened to music
completed their tasks faster and generated better ideas. Sometimes when youre in a situation
where 50 people share the open-office space, it can be overwhelming. A pair of headphones
might be your best friend, using music as a mental escape can be crucial to productivity in the
workplace. Although there are qualities about music that can be detrimental to productivity, song
lyrics can be destructive to your train of thought when dealing with high intensive work. If you
are immersed in language related tasks, listening to lyrics can distract the brain. Songs that you
have familiarized yourself with are the most ideal to listen to while focusing on a project.
I had no idea that lyrics distracts the human brain from the task at hand. It deals with the
same part of the brain as the task at hand so I can see why your brain can be overwhelmed. This
passage entails the type of music that is best for productivity.

A study on college students proved that they performance increased on spatial reasoning
tests after listening to a piece of music by Mozart. This lead people to make the assumption that
Mozarts music temporarily increases an individuals intelligence. To compliment this, Zell

growth of the baby. New studies prove the theory that Mozart makes a person instantly smarter is
ridiculous but learning how to play an instrument at an young will stimulate other abilities. Patel
says this is a relatively new field of scientific study. Due to the lack of technology, the field of
study in music neuroscience didnt blow up till the 21st century. Music can help us answer some
of the more difficult questions concerned with the brain. For example, How do we process
sequences and then make sense of them? Music in some aspects is simpler than language but it
is still complex enough to where it can answer the questions about the human brain.

It is very important that a child is nurtured the best possible when they are a newborn.
Music is a way to stimulate brain activity which in turn will raise the intelligence level of the
child. It is important that researchers find deeper answers to brain activity involving music so we
can use it as an advantage for the kids and maybe even adults.

Music is in the minority of activities that involve the whole brain. Music is part of every
culture in the world and it has been discovered that listening to music will improve memory and
learning language. In the field of pain management, music can help reduce the sensation and
distress of both chronic and postoperative pain. According to a United Kingdom based journal,
music reduces depression by up to 25%. Music therapy is used an alternative in hospitals for
medication during childbirth. Music is also used in surgeries to compliment anesthesia as well as

after the operation is completed. Music also produces a revulsive effect meaning to alter the
distribution of blood. Music stimulates endorphins which counteracts pain, it calms the patient so
the procedure can be performed smoothly.
Creating a routine of playing music every morning and evening can lower an individuals
blood pressure. In a study dealing with different paces of music, participants showed they had a
higher heart rate when they listened to lively music. Stroke patients can recover their lost
abilities such as verbal memory and attention span by listening to music everyday. If you suffer
from migraines you can music to reduce the intensity, frequency and the length of the headache.
if you have a profound emotional experience with music it can lead to the secretion of immuneboosting hormones.
Music has more uses than most people know about, it can be used for a wide variety of
therapies and medicines. It can also build an immunity which is insane to think about.
