2. (a) A simply supported beam of 16m effective span carries the concentrated loads of
4kN,5kN & 3kN at distances 3,7 &11m respectively from the left support. Draw shear
force and bending moment diagrams

(b) A 6m long cantilever carries loads of 2kN and 3kN at 2m and 5m respectively from fixed
end and a UDL of 10kN/m over its entire length. Draw SFD and BMD

3. (a) Derive the basic bending equation

(b) A T-Section has the following dimensions

The section is subjected to a vertical shear force of 300kN. Sketch the shear stress
distribution for the T-Section.

4. (a) A simply supported beam of span L is subjected to central point load w. Derive the
expression for deflection at centre and slope at ends.

(b) A cantilever of 3m length and of uniform rectangular cross section 150mm
wide and
300mm deep is loaded with a 30kN load at its free end. In addition to this it carries a UDL
of 20 kN/m run over entire span. Calculate slope and deflection at free end. Take
E=2.1x105N/mm2

5. (a) A load of 75kN is carried by a column made of cast-iron. The internal and external
diameters are 200mm and 180mm respectively. If the eccentricity of the load is 35mm.
Find(1)maximum and minimum stress intensities (2) Up to what eccentricity there is no
tensile stress in the column.

(b) A copper rod of 40mm diameter is surrounded tightly by a cast iron tube of 80mm
external diameter, the ends being firmly fastened together. When put to a compressive load
of 30 kN, what load will be shared by each. Also determine the amount by which the
compound bar shortens if it is 2m long.

6. (a) Derive the Eulers formula for a column hinged at both ends.

(b) A strut in a framed structure is formed of a mild steel pipe 15cm external diameter and 1
cm thick. It is 4m long and has pin-jointed ends. Taking factor of safety as 5, find the load
to which the struct may be subjected. Take fc = 331 N/mm2. Use rankines formula and

(b) A solid steel shaft has to transmit 75KW at 200 r.p.m. Taking allowable shear stress as
70MPa. Find suitable diameter of shaft, if the maximum torque transmitted on each
revolution exceeds the mean by 30%.
