The DID Designer

Writing unit
STEP 1 Know the Learner

The class consists of first grade students. The class has a total of 19 students, 9 girls and 10 boys.
There are ten Caucasians, five Hispanics, three African Americans and one Asian American.
The learning styles of the students include six visual learners, five auditory learners, four
kinesthetic learners, and 4 that are a combination of visual and kinesthetic learners.
The multiple intelligences in this classroom are kinesthetic, spatial, linguistic and interpersonal
and intrapersonal
The entry level for this unit is varied. Some students have more experience with writing than
others, a few seem to have a head start on this depending on if their parents have helped them in
the past.

STEP 2 Articulate Objectives and Standards

The student will be able to write their own opinion paper which includes their opinion about a
topic or book of their choice, and give a reason for that opinion with 95% accuracy.
The student will be able to write an informative paper about a certain topic or book of their choice
which will include facts with 95% accuracy.
The student will be able to write their own narrative that will include two or more events, details
and time-based words to signal event order with 95% accuracy.

STEP 3 Identify Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching strategies:
Opinion paper

Read an example of an opinion paper, point out the different aspects of the paper (topic/name of
book paper is based on, the authors opinion, the reason for their opinion, closure)
Give a personal example of an opinion paper
As a class, discuss the last book read together, make an outline of an opinion paper.
Make a checklist of everything that should be included on an opinion paper
Discuss what each group wrote based on the outline, asses what is missing via checklist (call on
students to check items off the list)
After student reads their opinion paper in front of class go through the checklist to see if
everything was included in the paper (call on students to check items off the list)

Informative paperRead an example of an informative paper, point out the different aspects of the paper (topic/book
title, facts about the topic/book, closure)
Read a correct and incorrect example of an informative paper via projector
Discuss as a class items that need to be included in the paper, write a checklist on the board
Discuss which one was incorrect and why (what was missing via check list)
Discuss options for a topic for the paper, list them on the board
Once student has chosen a topic and made an outline ok their outline so they can begin writing,
or help them get the items missing from the checklist

Have the student turn in their informative paper and list of things they learned from their partners
paper, for a grade
NarrativeTouch base on what a narrative is, talk about different aspects that are included in a narrative
(events, details, time-based words etc.) via power point presentation
Whole class write a narrative about daily schedule together via smartboard
Go over personal sentence handout
Show class how to use voice recorders
Play students stories to the class via computer
Learning Strategies:
Opinion paper

Make groups, have the students write the paper based off of the outline on the board.
Students write their own opinion paper and share it with family at home
Students will pick a partner and read their opinion paper to them out loud
Have the student read their paper in front of the class
Have students give positive feedback to classmates paper

Informative paperStudent come up with a list of 3 possible topics, have them show me the list and help them
choose an appropriate topic
Have the students write in their journal the items that will be included in their paper (topic, facts
etc.)
Write an outline and get it approved by the teacher
Once outline is approved, begin writing the paper
Read the paper to a partner, have partner write down the topic, and facts that they learned from
their classmates paper
Turn in paper and things learned from the partners paper for a grade
NarrativePractice making personal sentences via handout
Outline for narrative
Write personal narrative about what they did over the weekend
Record their narrative via voice recorders
STEP 4 Identify and Select Support Technologies
Material needed:
Student journals, microphone for student, computer, Microsoft word, projector, voice recorders, white
boards and markers, smartboard, PowerPoint, personal sentence handout.
STEP 5 Evaluate and Revise the Design

Students will be graded on their papers final draft(s), effort, facts learned from classmates informative
paper, and participation throughout. A quiz will be given asking what each paper is, and what they all
include.

If more than 4 students dont receive at least a 95% on their opinion paper than they are required
to make an outline and a final draft of the paper at home and turn it in the next day.
If more than 4 students do not receive at least a 95% on their informative paper than we will go
over the facts of informative papers again and assign the paper as homework
If more than 4 students do not receive at least a 95% on their narrative then we will discuss
correct and incorrect examples as a class and decide why they are incorrect.
If more than 5 students quizzes do not show adequate knowledge based on the standards above on
than the lesson plan will be revised.
