Introduce topic of observing and recording the weather with a whole class
discussion. Read Seasons. Point out the weather word wall and have
students talk about what they know about weather and seasons using the
vocabulary words. (Activating background knowledge)
Teach students how to observe and record weather data with writing and
drawing. Model how to use the Weather Log.
Go outside and observe the weather. Students will fill out weather logs
during this time with assistance from the teacher if needed. The teacher
will gather groups of 4-5 students during this time to help them read their
thermometers and record the temperature.
The class will come back inside and sit on the carpet. Students will
participate in a think-pair-share about what they saw seen during the
weather observations.
Whole class discussion/reflection. The teacher will facilitate a discussion
and encourage students to use the words found on the word wall in their
discussions of the observations they made that day. The teacher will ask
them What did you see/feel/hear/smell? etc.

Adaptations for ELLs:

There will be three different Weather Log worksheets provided for students based on their
English proficiency. One uses labelled pictures, one uses a word bank, and one has just lines
for writing. The word wall will have pictures to accompany each word and the words will be
written in students first language help them read if they are literate in their first language and
to show that other languages are important and valued in the classroom. The students will be
welcome to converse in their first language during the think-pair-share. Students will also be
welcome to use pictures on their weather logs to support their ideas. The teacher will also be
using simplified sentence structure so instead of saying Were going to observe different
forms of precipitation while we are outside I would say When we go outside, we will
observe, or look at, the different kinds of precipitation like rain, snow, hail, or sleet. The
teacher will also give students plenty of wait time during the class discussion and think-pairshare to allow students to think of answers.
Assessment: The weather logs will serve as formative assessments at the end of the day. The
teacher will also listen to the think-pair-shares and student discussion. A summative
assessment will be given at the end of the week.
