Abstract
Introduction
Colorectal cancer and CEA levels are two things that are related to the diagnosis,
treatment planning, and prognosis. There are differences in the anatomical
location of the tumor to the peritoneal reflection especially on the overlying
stroma. This study aimed to compare differences in preoperative CEA serum
levels and relationship with metastasis in patients with colon cancer and rectal
cancer at initial diagnosis is made.
Method
This retrospective study included 75 patients with colorectal cancer were retrieved
from medical records from January 2010 to December 2012, consisted of 36
women and 39 men, the location of the tumor in the colon or rectum, preoperative
serum levels of CEA, staging, histopathological types and their metastases.
Result
There was no significant difference between preoperative CEA serum levels of the
tumor location with the same histopathological type or different (p = 0.231 vs. p =
0.092), did not differ significantly between the location of the tumor with
metastasis to histopathologic type of the same or different (p = 0632 vs. p =
0.620). Tendency of metastasis on preoperative CEA serum levels with a cut off
point of 36.265 mg/dl (sensitivity 64.7%, specificity 95.1%).
Conclusion
Differences in the anatomical location of the tumor to the peritoneal reflection
does not affect the difference in preoperative CEA serum levels and a trend
toward metastasis on preoperative CEA serum levels with a cut off point of
36.265 mg/dl at initial diagnosis is made
