Teaching Philosophy

My ideal class structure is having a balance between the students and the
intern teaching the course. I believe that the classroom setting should be an
environment that fosters learning in a space where students are able to openly ask
questions and participate in discussions. In my opinion, this is a way in which
students can have meaningful discussions and can learn more from their
interactions with the intern because they are being active participants while also
having an input in the conversations. Although the interns have a position of power
in the classroom, I think that it is important to establish a balance in the classroom
where the role of the teacher is respected while also providing the students with
space to voice their opinions without fear of being told they are wrong.
My classroom facilitation style is to utilize the technology in the classroom
as well as my personality to lead the discussions in class. I utilize PowerPoint in
order to create a visual aid for students so that they can easily see what it is I am
referring to and so that they can keep track of what is the most important
information that they need to know. I also use my personality in that I keep an
upbeat and happy approach in class discussions to encourage my students to speak
and participate in the discussions. That being said, I also like to provide my students
with time to think about the questions that we will cover in discussions in order to
allow them with the opportunity to gather their thoughts before having to
participate in the whole group discussion.

My role as an intern is to help facilitate the discussion of various topics in the

classroom. This includes providing the students with time to discuss questions with
partners as well as providing them with questions to answer in large group
discussions. My role is also to answer questions that the students may have about
the topics that we cover using my personal experiences and what I know about the
topic. Another one of my roles is to make sure that the classroom objectives are met
at each of our classes and to make sure that the class does not sway from the topics
that are to be covered during class. Moreover, one of the main roles of myself as an
intern is to be a role model and provide meaningful advice and information to my
students in order to prepare them for their collegiate career at the University of
Illinois.

The role of the students within the classroom is to gather information and

apply it to their academic careers in the College of LAS. The students are to be
actively participating in the classroom in order to have meaningful discussions
about resources and topics relevant to our campus. They are also supposed to be
inquisitive and ask questions that they have in order to get the most out of the
discussions that are being had in class. Also, another student role includes keeping
track of their assignments in order to maximize their ability to participate in
discussions as well as to maintain their grades.
The skills and techniques that I utilize in order to foster learning within my
classroom are being relatable, being respectful, being flexible, having a positive
attitude, and listening to students feedback. By establishing with my students that I
too, am a student, they have been able to relate to me as a student and peer. In this

way, my students are comfortable in approaching me with questions and concerns

that have arisen throughout the course of the semester. This, along with a positive
attitude, has also helped my students become more comfortable in the classroom,
they are more likely to actively participate if I can relate with their current situation
of being a new incoming students and experiencing all the struggles and
accomplishments that come with college life. In turn, this has established respect in
my classroom. That is, my students respect me as I respect them and this creates a
healthy environment where we can have open discussions and recognize that others
may have different experiences and/or opinions than those of our own. Moreover,
having a positive attitude in the classroom reinforces the fact that the intern is
approachable and that students can ask questions without being fearful. Being
flexible and listening to students feedback has also helped me create the ideal
learning environment because I have been able to adapt my lesson plans and
discussions to best fit the needs of my students. As a result of these techniques, I
have been able to find what best fits in my classroom and have been able to apply
this knowledge in the creation of my lesson plans in regards to figuring out the
activities that would most likely appeal to my students. Overall, I prefer this
skills/techniques to others because I can relate with my students while also being
their teacher. These skills have allowed me to get to know my students on a more
personal basis and have created an environment in the classroom that has safe,
open discussions.
