Teacher: Aaron Napier

Subject: Biology 4th Period

Date: September 1, 2015
Lesson Aim: Chemistry of Life
Bellringer Activity: Have students get their Google Classroom username and password
information sheets out. This is necessary to login in order to complete the assignment,
unless the student has remembered his or her login information. (5 mins.)
SLO: SOL Bio. 2. The student will be able to recognize scientific models and images of
the following: enzymes, substrates, lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acid, atoms,
monomers, polymers, activation sites, pH Scale, solution, solute, solvent, covalent bonds,
ionic bonds, and hydrogen bond.
Introduction: What makes up life and what gives life the energy that it needs? Elicit
student responses. This is used as anticipation before the students examine biochemistry.
(15 mins.)
Lesson Content: Google Docs, Google Images, and online collaboration.
Questions: What are the four macromolecules? What makes up the four
macromolecules? What is an enzyme, substrate, and activation site? What are covalent
and ionic bonds? How is a hydrogen bond different from covalent and ionic bonds? If salt
is poured into boiling water, which is the solvent, the water or salt?
Teach the Lesson:
Activities:
o Students will discuss the definition of life as stated in the textbook,
compared to other definitions across many disciplines. Students will
discuss chemicals and reactions that make life possible.
o Students will complete the poster notes via Google Classroom by inserting
images of vocabulary words and describing the terms. (100 mins.)
Materials:
o Computers in library or computer lab
o Google Classroom
o Google Docs (attached)
o Google Images
o Scholarly Websites for unknown terms
Check for Understanding:
o Students will discuss at least one term each the next day at the beginning
of class.
Self- Evaluation:
Remind students about the procedure for walking to the library without disrupting
other classes and classmates. Keep students engaged in the assignment for the duration of
class and ensure that they are not playing games. (Keep students in the red!)
