ClosingGuantanamoBayDetentionCamp
Sinceitsopeningin2002,GuantanamoBayDetentionCamp(commonlyreferredtoas
GTMO)hasservedasapoorrepresentationofnotonlytheAmericanprisonsystem,butof
Americaitself.Theprisonwasconstructedtohouseforeigncriminalscapturedoverseasfrom
MiddleEasterncountries,themajorityofwhichcapturedfromAfghanistan.Locatedatthe

ThepeaceandquietofthelandscapesurroundingGTMO,composedofmostlyrocky

Thankfully,inasupermaxprison,escapeeswouldntbeaproblem.Thisisduetotheirextremely
highlevelofsecurityandefficiency.SupportersofGTMOalsoarguethatopeninganewprison
tohousedetaineesintheUnitedStateswouldjustbetoocostly.Itistruethatsupermaxes
typicallycosttwoorthreetimesmoretobuildandoperatethantraditionalmaximumsecurity
prisons(Mears).Moneywouldnotbeinissue,however,becauseGTMOisoverfundedasitis.
AprisonbuiltintheUnitedStateswouldcostsignificantlylesscomparedtothecostofGTMO.
