LESSON PLAN TITLE: A Celebration Collage (day 2: studio)

TEACHERS NAME: Mandy and Kaity


TOTAL TIME: 2 hours
STUDENTS: 20+
PREPARATION
Materials: large sheets of colored paper, recycles magazines,
some pre-cut paper shapes, bottles of glue, an assortment of
crayons and markers, pencils, sheets of different colored tissue
paper, safety scissors, and pre-cut pieces of string and yarn.
Resources: PowerPoint relating back to day one, Images by
artists listed in day one Introduction, and Demo Project
presented on the board.

celebration, collage, culture, and traditions
TEACHING THE LESSON
Objectives
1. Students will design a celebration collage
2. Students will develop a narrative to explain their celebration
3. Students will map out their narrative using sketches on day
one
Introduction:
I will introduce the lesson with going back to day one
information, to remind students of what we are preparing to
create in class. Examples of celebrations will be given and
artist`s work will be show again to remind students how to be
create with the collage process. Once objectives are
established I will show an example that was created on the
board in front of the classroom. I will then explain tools and
materials we are using in class and ask if there are any
questions on the process of designing their own collage.
Demonstration: I will begin by demonstrating the way to make a
collage in step-by-step format. I will introduce different
supplies that students can choose to use. While
demonstrating I will explain how creativity can influence their
collages to look a certain way while still telling their
narrative. After the process is understood and materials are
known how to use, I will pass-out supplies to students.

Student Activity: I expect students to reflect back on their


sketches made during day one, and brainstorm with each
other before jumping into the studio work. Once students are
set on an idea to show their time of a celebration they will
begin to choose materials they want to use to express
themselves. While working on their projects students will
reflect on the time when the celebration happened and
prepare a story to share with the class.
Guided Practice: I will ask questions about their stories and about
their methods used to create the piece presented. I will recap on what it really means to have a celebration and how
other students cultures differ in creating their own story. We
will discuss what it means to be diverse and how this
positively effects different celebrations around the world.
Clean-up: Students will put their scraps of loose paper into a
basket or container that can possibly be re-used in the future
for other collage projects. I will go around and collect scissors
safely while students collect glue bottles. There will be
different piles for different materials used while creating the
collage that will be collected in either plastic baggies or
basket/containers. Once the room is picked up we will hang
their artwork on one section of the room to be critiqued
easily.
Assessment: Who is the celebration created in your narrative?
Did you tell a story you remember vividly? What did the
original sketches consist of? How well do you think you
communicated the message? What views/vantage points did
you apply to show the emotion along with your celebration?
