Topic/Objective:
Unit 3
Class/Period: Biology
Date: 11/22/15
Essential Question: Investigate the molecular pathway through which light energy is
transferred to chemical
energy and dispersed throughout an ecosystem
Questions:
What is the carbon
cycle?
`
What is carbons
importance?
What are ATPs?
What are
heterotrophs and
autotrophs?
What is
photosynthesis?
Notes:
The carbon cycle starts with the sun providing energy for
plants.
The plants will then use the energy from the sun to make
oxygen and glucose to provide energy for themselves and air
for other organisms.
The other organisms breathe in the oxygen and exhale
carbon dioxide that will travel back to the plants with water
before the cycle starts over again.
formulas for
photosynthesis and
cellular respiration?
Summary: Energy is spread through ecosystems by the carbon cycle and the food chain. Since heterotrophs cant
make their own energy but autotrophs can, heterotrophs eat the autotrophs and take some of the energy from
other heterotrophs or by eating autotrophs. Autotrophs go through photosynthesis, which when a plant takes
sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make oxygen and glucose along with ATP. There are two stages of
photosynthesis; the light dependent stage and the light independent stage. The light dependent stage takes
NADP+, ADP, sunlight, and water to create oxygen, NADPH+, and ATP. The light independent stage takes NADPH+,
ATP, and carbon dioxide to create glucose, NADP+, and ADP after going through The Calvin Cycle. Photosynthesis
can be effected by sunlight, temperature, water, and carbon dioxide; but, at a certain point in time, water, carbon
dioxide, and sunlight will level out. Temperature will always effect photosynthesis because it is too hot or too cold,
photosynthesis will slow down until it comes to a full stop. Photosynthesis takes place in the granum, stacks of
thylakoids, inside of the chloroplast of a plant. Photosynthesis has three parts, two of which are anaerobic,
meaning that no oxygen is required. Glycolysis and Krebs Cycle are anaerobic while the Electron Transport Chain
is aerobic, it needs oxygen.
