INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE(S)
Students will define tragedy and evaluate the theme tragic love in William Shakespeares Romeo
and Juliet. Students will also become familiar with the characters of the play. The students will be
able to summarize in writing in no less than five to six sentence three of the main characters of the
play.

Indicator:
This will be evident when students to determine one of the themes in Romeo and Juliet after
reading the first two acts of the play.
CCSS.ELA-Speaking and Listening: Comprehension and Collaboration (9-10)1a
Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly
draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or
issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.

This will be evident when students are able to answer questions asked by the teacher during
the class lesson.

Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture
of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters.
Indicator: This will be evident when students complete a tragic love dialogue assignment

Indicator:
This will be evident when students sue context clues from the play to determine the meaning
behind the phrases used by the characters.

MOTIVATION
The students will begin the lesson by watching an animated Romeo and Juliet video. The students
will watch the entire video clip. The video will help to engage the learner and generate excitement for
the upcoming lesson while creating a light and bright environment which encourages learning.

ADAPTATIONS

The Student who is a English Language Learner will be provided with the appropriate vocabulary
words and meanings prior to the lesson in order to increase comprehension
Struggling students will be paired with patient stronger students to ensure clear and intelligible
discussion

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Tier 1: Students will be given a worksheet consisting of vocabulary words used in the lesson.
Handout will also contain pictures where applicable.
Tier 2: Students will be given a worksheet consisting of vocabulary words and their meanings used in
the lesson. Handout will also contain pictures where applicable.
Tier 3: Students will be given a worksheet consisting of vocabulary words and their meanings with
sample sentences when applicable. Handout will also contain pictures where applicable to help with
understanding the meaning of the words.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
After completion of the do now, a teacher led lecture will begin where students will be ask to
volunteer a definition of a tragedy (What is tragedy? Who is Romeo and Juliet? What makes
the story of Romeo and Juliet a tragedy? 15 minutes)
After reviewing who Romeo and Juliet is the teacher will then begin to list main characters in
the play (Why are the characters we listed important to the play? Who has a greater influence
on a teenager, their family or friends? Why? 20 minutes)
Once the discussion is completed students will come back together as a class for a quick
teacher led wrap up. Students will complete an traffic light before they leave the classroom
(5 minutes)

ASSESSMENT
Students will assessed informally using the teaching strategy called exit ticket. Students will
complete a traffic light on a post it that will be stuck to the wall as they leave the classroom detailing
anything they still do not understand, have questions about or learned.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
For further review students will research one fact about William Shakespeare. The student will write
two to three paragraphs describing why that fact may have influenced the writing of the play Romeo
and Juliet
ACADEMIC INTERVENTION
The students will come to extra help sessions held after school. Additional review will be provided
under direct intervention with the teacher

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
Students will create a five minute power point presentation describing what times were like for
teenagers during the time Romeo and Juliet was written.
