Module 2

Observations

Class: Level 2

(1)

Observation Date: Sunday, 12/10/2014

Lesson: Conjunctions and Linking Words

1) Describe the class and lesson:

-Around 20 students who had already some previous knowledge of conjunctions
and linking words. The lesson has been introduced to them a week before. But this
was more practice on the topic.
2) Ways the classroom observation was useful
It showed me how I can build up a lesson in steps, starting with review and
introduction, and then working towards building their knowledge base, finally
ending with a formative assessment.
3) Teaching techniques that I could apply to my classes to improve student
learning:
Quick review followed by independent practice would be a technique I would
always use in my classroom from now on.
4) Teaching techniques that I would modify or exclude when teaching my
own course:
I liked all the techniques, but maybe add some technology to the lesson.
5) Classroom organization
The class was clean and organized. It wasnt too crowded and students could move
around to talk to each other or turn around to work with partners.
6) Instructional management:
The teacher was able to answer all questions. He also knew what he was going to
introduce for the next class so he focused only on certain aspects of the topic.
There was use of technology by the teacher only, which seemed suitable for this
particular lesson.

7) Instructional strategies:
The lesson objectives were stated but not displayed. There was a quick review at
the beginning of the lesson, with the teacher providing examples on the board as
warm-up. The lesson had already been introduced, and the teacher demonstrated
appropriate ways of answering the questions before the task was set. Students had
independent practice, then had to work together to share their answers. All students
had to get a chance to answer or share their response with the class, in addition to
reasoning.
Students were generally well behaved and respectful. There were a few students
who had established good rapport with the teacher, and he used a lot of humor in
the class. The teacher moved around to talk to all the students and groups,
providing feedback and some necessary explanations. If he noticed all the students
facing the same difficulty he would explain the problem to the whole class, or let
them know that this is something they were going to tackle in the coming class. All
students were actively engaged, as he had each of them answer a question even if
they worked in the same group.
