Group Workshop to Discuss Rubin's Essay


Group 1: 4 students

1. Part of Rubin's analysis of the Coca Cola ad follows the


structuralist approach. Pinpoint the paragraphs where this type
of analysis is used, and then write a short paragraph, explaining
how Rubin conducts such an analysis and what things she
focuses on.
2. How would you analyze one the image text you chose for your
assignment, using the structuralist approach? Give examples.

Group2: 4 students
1. Part of Rubin's essay gives a cultural assumption analysis.
Pinpoint the paragraphs where this type of analysis is used, and
then write a short paragraph, explaining how Rubin conducts
such an analysis and what things she focuses on.

reasoning behind analyzing the ad through the lens of the 20 th
century American society.

within its historical context (21st century) only? Would you
connect the past to the present while analyzing your image
texts? If yes, how?

Group 4: 4 students
1. In addition to her analysis of the Coca Cola ad in light of the 20 th
century America, Rubin analyzes the ad from the perspectives of
a 21st century reader. Pinpoint the paragraphs where this
perspective is elaborated on, and then write a short paragraph,
explaining why Rubin analyzes the ad through the lens of a 21 st
century reader.
2. Would you read the image text you chose for your assignment
within its historical context only (21st century)? Would you
