SWIM LESSON SKILLS BY LEVEL

These lists do not include all the skills covered in each level; it contains
those skills that may help parents determine the level at which their child
should register. Look at each level and determine whether your child can
consistently perform all the skills within that level. If so, check the next
level, and keep moving through until you reach one for which your child
cannot consistently perform all the skills. That probably is the right level
for your child. It is better to underestimate the childs abilities than to
overestimate the childs abilities. It is easier to move a child to a higher
level than to move him or her down. If you are still not sure of your childs
level after looking at this list, contact the Aquatic Department to set up
an assessment test for your child prior to registering for a class.

PARENT & CHILD

The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in
the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving
through water and on dry land, while the parent will become aware of
how to teach his or her child to be safe in and around the water. Classes
are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent
guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will be exposed to
games that use basic movements in the water, such as kicking, arm
strokes, and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental
abilities of each child.
Water acclimation: Has a happy expression in the water, wets face and
arms and imitates parents by putting face in the water
Water entry/exit: Enters the poolfrom a sitting position upon
request, climbs out of the pool with assistance
Breath control: Shipping and expelling water on cue, submerging and
blows bubbles on request or cue
Balance: Maintains stable vertical position in an IFD without parental
support, balances on parents knee with minimal support, navigates,
turns 180 to 360 degrees while wearing a PFD
Locomotion: Alternating paddles and kicks

APPRENTICE/MASTER ENGINEERS CLASSES

GRADES 3-8
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING: MASTER MACHINES
During the Mechanical Engineering classes, students use the Engineering
Design Process to design, create, test and refine a variety of machines
and mechanical systems. Students learn the basics of fluid mechanics,
simple machines and other design and engineering concepts while
constructing roller coasters, egg-drop vehicles and an incredibly fast airpowered dragster that they get to keep at the end of the course.

January 11 - February 15
Mondays
6:00 - 7:30 pm
Ages 7-14
$95
ELECTRONIC GAME DESIGN: RACING GAMES
During the Electronic Game Design classes, students will use Multimedia
Fusion 2 to create their own video game. Students design a racetrack,
race cars and an environment where their cars compete. At the end of the
class, students take home a copy of the game they created. Ages 7-14.

HARDWARE ENGINEERING - GET WIRED WITH MAKEY MAKEY
Imagine designing a piano using celery or creating a custom digital training
program. Now, envision playing video games using just your body, a bit
of wire and your own imagination. In our hardware engineering program,
students engineer their own customized video game controllers using
a MaKey MaKey device and materials that can be found in just about
any kitchen. Through application of the circuitry, acoustical engineering
and video game design, students discover new ways to interact with
technology. Ages 7-14.
