Plot Overview

The novel The Red Pyramid was written as a

recording of the two main protagonists Sadie and
Carter Kane who are telling the world of their not so
fabulous adventures travelling across the United
States, Europe, and through the duat. While on their
first day back together as a family in England their
father, Julius Kane, takes them to the British
Museum to see the ancient artifact, the Rosetta
Stone. Their father just so happens to forget to tell
them that he was about to summon the god of the
dead Osiris, when something goes terribly wrong
and he ends up releasing five imprisoned ancient
Egyptian gods: Isis, Horus, Osiris, Set, and
Nephthys. The breaking out of these gods leads to
the biggest conflict of the story, the impending war
between order and chaos, the war between the good
and the bad. While trying to prevent this impending
war the Kane siblings, the cat goddess Bast, and
their basketball playing baboon Khufu are also
being hunted down by the magicians of the First
Nome of The House of Life. These magicians are
trying to stop them from defeating the god Set, for
only the gods know what reason. However, they not
only have magicians trying to stop them but
demons, evil shabti, and gods who are all working
for Set, because they do not like the mortals and
what they have done to the world (make peace). The
Kane siblings are put through many tests and battles
to show that they are worthy of fighting (and
possibly defeating) the god of evil, Set, and saving
the rest of the mortal and the not so mortal world
from an eternal time of chaos.

Historical Context

I didnt want to admit it, but I couldnt stand the

thought of being separated from Sadie again. She
wasnt much but she was all I had. (6.172)

This novel , The Red Pyramid, was written in the

year 2010. In 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit
the small country of Haiti that left over 316,000
dead, and an entire nation shocked. Then later on
in the same week of the earthquake the Chadian
Civil War that lasted over five years, finally ended.
Through the weeks of February twelfth and
February twenty-eighth the Winter Olympic Games
are held in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada. On the

Character Analysis

Themes

Carter Kane is exactly like your typical average Joe

except for the fact that his life is the hands, or
should I say handle of a suitcase, dont forget that
he the blood of the pharaoh, or of pharaoh descent.
Carter could be described as a hobo homeschooler,
big brother and chicken warrior. He isnt one to
question authority all that much, as a matter of fact
it takes quite a lot of disastrous events to even
make Carter think of going against his authority
figure. At the age of fourteen Carter is walking
wikipedia when it comes to all things ancient Egypt,
due to his fathers job as an egyptologist. Carter can
also be described as one who doesnt fit in well with
other kids his age, besides his love for basketball
and the knowledge of nearly every man whos ever
played for the Lakers stats, theres really no other
way they are alike. The older Kane even states In
fact Ive been to more museums than Id like to
admit- it makes me sound like a total geek. Carter
looks exactly like a uni professor at the age of
fourteen with khakis, a button-down collared shirt
and loafers, all he's missing is the Harry Potter style
glasses and the five o'clock shadow. Even though
they were separated for the last six years, minus
the two days of the year they are allowed together,
Carter is still very protective of his younger sister
and is fully aware that he has to step up and look
out for her. Deep down Carter knows that despite
her tough exterior, Sadie is vulnerable to the
emotions that are to be brought forth the night their
dad goes missing and that he has to reassure her
that everything will be alright. When in need of
assistance on the battlefield, Carter can call upon
the god inside of him, literally. A mortal hosting a
very powerful and ancient god is very, very deadly.
However, because Carter is the blood of the
pharaoh, he is able to control the king of the gods
himself, Horus. In time of need Carter is able to call
upon Horus for advice on how to handle a situation
or for help in battle. When receiving help from

Rules and Order is the most important theme in

this book because it helps set up the entire story
line, with the war between the gods of order and
chaos. In the book, Riordan uses rules and order as
a sense of balance, that determines the ways of
order and chaos. In The Red Pyramid, the Kane
siblings learn what it's like to have Egyptian magic
applied to their lives and how keeping order isn't
always fair. They learn that maintaining order and
finding balance comes with very difficult decisions
that they must make to allow the best outcome for
the greatest number of people. Rules and order is
most definitely not the most fun of ways, but it does
help save the world.
Family is another very important theme in The Red
Pyramid because it helps support the plot and main
story line. The Kane family wasn't always seen as
the picture perfect family, and they still aren't. With a
deceased mother, missing father (whom they
believed to be inside the red pyramid), and two
children hosting two of the most powerful gods and
fighting their way to Phoenix, Arizona to try and stop
the god of evil, Set, the Kane's are far way from
being anything but perfect. Through their tough
times however, Carter and Sadie learn to care for
one another, work with another and most
importantly, tolerate one another. Family is the only
reliable source that anyone in this book has, and
even though the family of ancient gods involves
violence, dismemberment, and backstabbing, family
is family.

Horus in battle, Carter becomes a giant chickenheaded warrior that can defeat enemies and help
allies. Carter is a very pretentious fourteen year old
that has been thrusted into the war between the
gods of order and chaos, but he is also very
determined to make sure that he, his sister, and the
friends they made along the way, come out of this
war victorious.
With hot pink streaks in her hair, ripped jeans,
combat boots, and a vintage leather jacket Sadie
Kane is your not so average London punk tween. At
the age of twelve Sadie is already a master rebel,
she lives by the words of ...when someone says I
forbid it, thats a good sign its worth doing (7.2)
Sadie was never one for authority figures seeing as
how she has lived with only her grandparents since
her father lost the custody battle, after her mother
suddenly died. In the beginning of the story when
visiting the British Museum with her father and
brother, Julius and Carter Kane, Sadie is
questioned by the police as to what the doings of
her father were. Sadie says, I could hear in his
voice that he was resisting the urge to strangle me.
Strangely, I get this alot from adults. (3.56) From
the way she talks the reader can tell that Sadie is
not very fond of Carter, seeing as how they only see
each other twice a year and are polar opposites,
making them feel more like distant cousins twice
removed rather than brother and sister. The young
Kane is very independent, strong, and extremely
stubborn. Sadie is also portrayed by her brother as
a sadistic sister, and scheming smarty pants, who
isnt afraid to sass anyone out who she deems fit.
However, despite her tough exterior she shows off
to the world, Sadie Kane is not immune to all
emotions and she often has her breaking points that
she believes to be horridly embarrassing. Sadie
hosts the goddess Isis, which is the goddess of
magic. With the help of Isis, Sadie develops her her
magical powers and becomes a slippery target, and
an excellent manipulator. Despite all she's been
through, Sadie Kane is a very sarcastic, rebellious,
and brilliant twelve year old girl, that is very driven
to have everyone she cares about, make it out of
this war alive, even if it means that she doesn't.
