Title: Lesson 4 Our World- The Equator, 7 Continents and 5 Oceans Date: December 11, 2015
I. Objectives
SOL Standards:
Social Studies (Geography)2.6 The student will demonstrate map skills by constructing simple maps, using title, map
legend, and compass rose.
Visual Arts Standard
2.10 Demonstrate how to put forms together to create a sculpture (of a sphere), using found
objects, glue, and tape. Provide a variety of found objects, glue, and tape, and direct students to
create a three-dimensional work of art.
Student objectives:
K: Students will know the location of the seven continents, five oceans, and the equator
U: Students will understand that maps help us understand our world on a broader scale
D: Students will locate areas (the seven continents and five oceans) on a globe.

III. Procedures for Learning Activities
Introduction
Ask students to talk about their map reliefs they did on the previous day with their
shoulder partner. Give them to the students once they have dried and allow students to talk about
what they put in their maps. What were some struggles about the map, were they able to identify
the capital and major land marks? Call on two to three students to share what they talked about
with their classmates.
Tell students that yesterday you asked them some questions about what city/state/and
country they lived in. Ask students if they know what the word continent means. Call on any
students who might know.

If a student didnt say so already, ask the students what continent they live on, if anyone
knows.
If they do, ask, do you know what continents are near us?
What other continents do you know?
*Be sure to write these on the chart that was created in the beginning of the unit.
Instructional Strategies
Pull up the virtual field trip Prezi. The Prezi includes information about each continent,
five oceans, the equator. Tell students they will be learning about the equator, seven continents
and the five oceans today. Tell students to say the word equator, tell them the equator is an
imaginary line that splits the world into two equal partsjust like the line of symmetry does to
so many shapes. The equator splits the world into north and south, and anything near the equator
is very hot!
Tell students they can raise their hand anytime during the Prezi if they: are from the
continent or know any other cool facts about the continent. Students are encouraged, but not
forced, to read the Prezi (be sure to go over any difficult words on the slide before the student
begins reading.
Once the Prezi is finished, pull open the interactive notebook lesson. Students will use the
information from the Prezi to help assist them with the interactive notebook lesson. The teacher
will follow the presentation. The interactive notebook lesson talks about America, North America
then the world continents. There are turn and talks and part of the notebook lesson that asks
students to get in groups to discuss a continent to talk about with the rest of the class.
Summary
Once students are back and have shared what their groups continent was and where it is
located on a map, have students go back to their desks. Students will be working with their table
partners on creating a poster of a world map. The map poster is premade and is completely black.
Each continent will be colored a different color and each ocean will be colored a different color.
Students will work together to label and color each continent. These will be posted in the
classroom.
When students are finished they will work individually to create their own balloon
globes. Students will have a balloon and a map worksheet. They will blow up the balloons.
Students will label each continent, cut them out, glue them on the balloon, and draw the equator
on the globes. These globes will be hung up in the classroom. The maps will include word banks.
*Give an exit ticket to name the major mountains America. They will write this in their
social studies journal.
IV. Assessment
Formative/informal assessments- Student turn and talks, student partner presentation during
SMARTboard lesson, student group poster, and student balloon globes will be counted as
informal assessments for this lesson.
V. Differentiation
ELLStudents will be working in groups which will help any low English language learner if they are
uncomfortable speaking to the group while presenting or sharing. Students will also have a lot of

visuals during the lesson, as well as having word banks when working on their individual globes.
Students can reference class unit chart.
Learning disabilitiesStudents with learning disabilities main focus will be working in a group. This way they can get
the most guidance from their peers and teacher when working. These students need extra
attention while working so the teacher will be coming around to them often, or as needed, when
working on balloon globes. Students have many visuals to work with and to help them while
working on their activities.
Advanced Learners- Extensions
Once students are finished they will be writing a poem about the seven continents and another
about five oceans. If student is able to, then include the equator, seven continents, and five
oceans in one poem.
Multiple IntelligencesSpatial- Students will have visuals during both presentations, as well as making two visuals of
their own (one in a group and another by themselves).
Linguistic- Students will be talking and sharing ideas with one another as well as teaching each
other about their content with group to their classmates during the SMARTboard lesson.
Interpersonal- Students will be working in groups to share ideas and thoughts about continents
and the five oceans.
Intrapersonal- Students will be working individually to create their own balloon globes and self
reflecting on the lesson to help them with this assignment.
Body Kinesthetic- Students will be creating maps and their own globes during this lesson. This
will help them learn the continents better when they are recreating the lesson that was just given
in their own way.
