General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Students will:
Develop number sense
Students will:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of addition of numbers with answers to 20 and
their corresponding subtraction facts, concretely, pictorially and symbolically,
by:
using familiar mathematical language to describe additive and subtractive
actions
creating and solving problems in context that involve addition and subtraction
modelling addition and subtraction,
using a variety of concrete and visual representations, and recording the
process symbolically.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
1. Communicate their reasoning behind their estimation strategies

Students will estimate the amount of counters in a container or bag.

What reasons did you have for your estimate?

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Containers with counters (5, 10, 15, 20)

Containers with a random amount of
counters.

Double ten frames.

PROCEDURE
Attention Grabber
Transition to Body

Introduction
Students will be beckoned to the front of the class
1) Using a small container that will hold less than 20
counters, have the students estimate the amount of
counters required to fill the container.
2) Fill with 5 counters, see if their estimates change
3) Find out the full number

Time

4) Students will be shown containers with 5, 10, 15, and 20

counters inside as benchmarks.
5) Students will be shown other bags with various amounts
of counters in them, they will be encouraged to estimate
the quantity contained.
Does looking at the containers help you estimate?

Students will be paired up
Pairs will be given a container with 20 counters and a double ten
frame.
Students will take turns putting a random number of counters in
a pile, both members will estimate the amount. They will find
out who is closer by using the double ten frame.
Do and example. Show how to figure out who is closer

Learning Activity
#1
Assessments/
Differentiation

Time

Have the students play the estimation game.

This activity requires counting to 20, the used of ten frames, and
estimation. Students should be paired up so that at least one of
the students is proficient at the task. Groups will be assessed
based upon their feedback of how they are performing their
estimates. Students should be using volumetric analysis and/or a
comparison scheme and/or subtraction.
