Year 8 Art Christmas Ornament instructions

Task 1: Stitching practice

-You will need a scrap of fabric, needle, thread and scissors.
-Cut a length of thread that is shorter than your arm length.
- Taking your time, pass one end of the thread through the needle and pull it
through about 10-15cm
-Tie a snot knot at the end of the longer side of the thread, as shown in
demonstration.
-Hold the needle between your thumb and index finger, over top of the hole with
the thread through it. This will make sure the thread doesnt pull out too easily.

-Pass the needle all the way through the fabric and pull out until the knot is
stopping the thread from pulling out anymore.
-Now continue passing the needle in and out of the fabric down a straight line to
make a running stitch (also known as a straight stitch) as shown in
demonstration.

-To finish, pass the needle to the back of the fabric, do a very small stitch and
make a knot; as shown in demonstration. Trim off any loose ends.
-Do two or three more lines of stitching, working on making your lines very
straight and your stiches small and even.

Task 2: Making your ornament

-to start you will need two calico shapes (two of the same), two pins, needle,
thread, string and scissors.
Step 1) Pin your two shapes together so they are even and in place. Fold the
string in half and place the cut ends in between the two shapes so it is coming
out of the top like a loop. Pin in place.

Step 2) Thread your needle

Step 3) Tie a snot knot in the end of your thread.
Step 4) Pass the needle through one piece of fabric, from the inside to the
outside to hide the knot.

Step 5) Use running stitch around your shape, staying approximately 6mm to
1cm away from the edge at all times. Make sure your stitches are no longer than
6mm.

Steps 6) leave a small gap in the stitching as shown in the above pictures. Tie a
knot and snip off excess thread. Remove the pins and put them away.
Step 7) you will need a small handful of hobby fill. Push small amounts of hobby
fill at a time into the shape through the whole you have left. Continue stuffing
until the shape is all full but is still able to be closed.

Step 8) Get one pin and pin the hole closed

Step 9) Re thread you needle and tie a new knot in the end. Use running stitch
to close up the hole. Finish by tying a knot and snipping off excess thread.

Extension Option 1: Re-thread and knot your needle and choose some beads to
sew on. See Mrs K for a demonstration.

Extension Option 2: Do a design on your ornament using pen, fine-liner or

marker. Practice on some scrap fabric first to see how it will look.

Extension Option 3: Make a second ornament, applying beading before sewing

the sides together.
